Default UPS reveals it has been testing self-driving tractor-trailers

UPS announced its venture capital arm, UPS Ventures, is investing in autonomous driving company TuSimple and testing self-driving tractor-trailers.

The tests of self-driving trucks started in May on a route between Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona, with a driver and engineer in the vehicle, according to the news release.

The company said in a Thursday news release it wants to better understand what would be required for autonomous trucking in its network at a level where "the vehicle's onboard computer is in complete control at all times, eliminating manual intervention."

In reference to the above post.

UPS Invests in TuSimple to Pursue Self-Driving Trucks
UPS Inc. announced its venture capital arm, UPS Ventures, has made a minority investment in autonomous driving company TuSimple to test self-driving tractor-trailers on a route in Arizona to determine whether the vehicles can improve service and efficiency in the UPS network.
The amount of the investment was not disclosed.
UPS contracts with third-party trucking companies during its peak shipping season. TuSimple believes it could cut average purchased transportation costs by 30%.

And now they will test self-driving vans for delivery's or shuttles.

UPS inks electric van deal with Arrival, to test Waymo automation
United Parcel Service Inc said on Wednesday it was ordering 10,000 electric delivery trucks from UK-based Arrival Ltd and teaming with self-driving startup Waymo as package carriers work to cut costs and tailpipe pollution.
UPS said a six-month test run with Waymo, the self-driving unit of Google parent Alphabet Inc, would start next month. UPS will pay Waymo to use autonomous Chrysler Pacifica minivans to shuttle packages from Phoenix UPS stores to a nearby sorting center several times a day, starting with one route.
Perez said the Waymo test would not replace the driver on the affected route. That driver will still make the scheduled daily UPS Store stop.

In some cases we are our own worst enemies when it comes to things like this. I’m not saying we the drivers but the technology advancing is taking away from the actual working people. As it stands now those trucks will still need drivers in the vehicles while going down the road but we all know the pay will go down. These trucks will still need drivers in the city to deliver and unload but that will probably change in the future.

The union stood up and kept the Mexican trucks out. They should put some heavy brakes on this stuff to slow it down also.
This is another benefit the industries have over us by making it so we are only organized by company. Somehow, someway, imo, we should be throughput all businesses like the right to work scabs are throughput all businesses....another way to membership without majority votes in particular companies needs to be thought up or established.....it may be too late for unions already....but membership by company doesn't seem to have worked. .....even if we stopped pur companies....the others would do it and sink our companies...constant weakening with the system we have had.
