Default How Romney Steered a Key Olympic Project to a Friend

As Mitt Romney got ready to take his seat in London for the Olympics' opening ceremonies, the focus of the presidential campaign this week shifted to the candidate's time running the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City. Romney is generally recognized as the take-charge executive who turned the Games around after a massive bribery scandal. But there's another side to that record. Romney's campaigns, as we've previously reported, have taken in $1.5 million in donations from the families and business associates of two central figures in the Salt Lake scandal. And documents obtained by Mother Jones shed new light on another of the candidate's Olympic connectionshis personal intervention on behalf of his closest Salt Lake friend, developer Kem Gardner, in connection with a key real estate deal.

I decided to read more about the Salt Lake scandal and the corruption that still surrounds it today.

And let’s give him full credit for what happened in Salt Lake. I think he was a managerial success. I think he overstates what he achieved there, but I think he was a managerial success. The problem is that he was brought in because of the worst Olympic scandal in history, and he befriended and awarded contracts to people deeply involved in the scandal that caused him to be recruited to this rescue operation. And he’s still collecting money from them.

I’ve written about three different characters, one of whom pled guilty in the Olympic scandal; one of whom took the Fifth Amendment in the grand jury and was immunized and testified at a criminal trial that he had made $131,000 in cash payoffs to Mitt Romney’s predecessor, the prior CEO of the Olympic Games; and the third of which was the most recent story, Kem Gardner.

A few more issues related to the Olympic scandal.

The Dizdarevic and Simmons donations to Romney over the years add up to $1.5 million, all of it connected directly or indirectly to contributors at the heart of a scandal that the noted IOC investigator Dick Pound said in his memoir “could have meant the end” of the international committee. It was a giant worldwide barrage of horrific headlines that continued for years. Yet, it simultaneously was Romney’s claim to fame, his ticket to the governor’s mansion in Massachusetts. Now, it has taken on a distant, blurry cast, as if all that matters is that he ran good Games. But if presidential campaigns are character tests, Romney’s starts in Salt Lake.

Say it isn't so Mitt as the big money donations keep pouring in.
