As for the comment about restructuring the union contracts, that in itself would have been union busting in my opinion.
If we bailed out Wall Street and the big insurance companies ( with fat executives ) then why not the hundreds of thousands of good jobs for the middle class ?
The debt ... revenues up, but debt went up.
If taxes weren't slashed, perhaps the debt would NOT have went up.
Can you say that for sure ?
Restructuring a union contract is union busting? What ever. Unions have been known to get too good of contracts. If the contract harms the company to the point where they can't make a profit, it's a bad contract.

Neither Wall Street or the auto companies should have received a bailout.

I can't say that for sure. But it's a fact that taxes were cut, the revenue went up. So where's the problem? Spending!!!!

What is the point of a contract if the company can go to court and have a judge nullify the contract ?
Does ABF have a bad contract ?
Can they make a profit and be competitive with other carriers ?

    Now, raising taxes.
Reagan did raise taxes after first lowering some taxes.

    Yes, he raised taxes in 1982, 1984, 1985, 1986 and 1987."
Did the Gipper really raise taxes during five years of his presidency? We checked.
Letís start by noting that if you recall Reagan as tax cutter, your memory is good. Reagan campaigned in 1980 on reducing taxes. During his administration, the top income tax rate decreased from 70 percent in 1981 to 28 percent in 1986.
But to combat a rising deficit and debt burden, Reagan also approved increased taxes.

Reaganís efforts to cut top income tax rates at the same time he was increasing defense spending created strain, and the federal debt rose from $994 billion at the start of his first term to almost $2.9 trillion at the end.

ABF may, we'll find out soon.

What is a contract if it runs the business into bankruptcy. Now, before you start jumping and down on what I just said. I'm not putting all the blame on the union at GM/Chrylser. That contract was probably fine back in 80s and maybe 90s. By economic times change. GM management I'm sure holds most of of the fault. And even if the union did no wrong. The contract may need to be changed to save a company.

Yes Reagan did raise some taxes. But most of the taxes he did raise was to help save Social Secruity. The payroll taxes. And those taxes are to be paid back to us in the SS benefits we earn.

But overall taxes were still lower. Spending has been the only problem.
