Jeep, an Obama favorite, looks to shift production to China

In another potential blow for the president's Ohio reelection campaign, Jeep, the rugged brand President Obama once said symbolized American freedom, is considering giving up on the United States and shifting production to China.

    What is your point ?
Fiat, the Italian controlling interest in Jeep, is a world corporation.
They can build anywhere they want.
We also have the choice not to purchase any Chinese built junk !
That includes crap from Wal-Mart and other Chinese junk warehouses.

That Jeep factory in Toledo is not very old...just a few years ago they demolished the old plant and built a new one.
Any carhaulers out there know just when that plant was built?

Whoa .... I think somebody got their stories confused.

Chrysler is strongly denying a report the company was considering moving all of its Jeep production to China.
The company has not been shy about wanting to build Jeeps in China, but Chrysler says it won’t quit building them in the United States.
Chrysler last year announced a $500 million investment to expand and modernize part of the Toledo Assembly Complex.
The planned expansion will add about 1,100 jobs, putting total plant employment at about 3,000.

That question actually has different answers. There are 2 interconnecting plants that support Jeep production.

The Toledo South Assembly Plant is the original Jeep CJ assembly factory. It was rebuilt for manufacture of the JK Wrangler for Jeep, starting on August 28, 2006.
The Toledo North Assembly Plant was opened in 2001 building the unibody Jeep Liberty.

thanks, fxstc07. I thought the old plant was completly demolished. I did not realize that some of it had been rebuilt.

Why would Fiat have Jeeps built in China? That's where the customers are. GM has plants in China. It's cheaper for Japan to build cars here. Capitalism is everywhere

    even in China

What part of a global economy don't you understand bean.
Manufacturers have built many different products all over the world for years.
    Jeep is no different.

Jeeps have been built under licence by various manufacturers around the world including Mahindra in India, EBRO in Spain, and several in South America. Mitsubishi built more than 30 different Jeep models in Japan between 1953 and 1998. Most of them were based on the CJ-3B model of the original Willys-Kaiser design.
American Motors set up the first automobile-manufacturing joint venture in the People's Republic of China on January 15, 1984. The result was Beijing Jeep Corporation, Ltd., in partnership with Beijing Automobile Industry Corporation, to produce the Jeep Cherokee (XJ) in Beijing. Manufacture continued after Chrysler's buyout of AMC.
Wasn't Reagan President back in 1984 ? So back then corporations were already outsourcing our jobs to China.
