Default New jersey state afl-cio urges governor christie to sign minimum wage legislation

“The New Jersey State AFL-CIO believes raising the minimum wage and including an annual cost of living adjustment (COLA) is a crucial first step toward helping low-income workers in this difficult economic climate, to combat growing income inequality and to address rising poverty rates in our state. In order to provide long-term economic stability to low-income workers, New Jersey needs a permanent fix for calculating its minimum wage, and that means establishing an annual COLA,” said President Wowkanech.
New Jersey’s growing poverty statistics are startling and enacting a comprehensive minimum wage policy would be a strong first step toward addressing this problem. According to the most recent Census Bureau statistics made available, from 2007 – 2011, 63,322 children and 33,202 families in New Jersey have fallen into poverty, an increase of 28% and 24% respectively.

That is true, but large companies routinely pay their employes minimum wage.
WalMart, Sam's Club, BJ's warehouse, etc, all while raking in billions in profits.
I guess that any or all laws are political BS according to you.

    Maybe other jobs aren't available.
I have never walked away from any job without knowing what I was doing next.
Then again, maybe that's why I own my home and I am enjoying a comfortable retirement.
It's all in the decisions we make.

Why do so many right wing people make it sound like it is so easy to just go find another job? Maybe that is the case where you live strappy but that is not the case where I live. A new Target is opening in ABQ. Over 7000 people applied for 200 jobs! I think New Mexico is becoming the new California! My 18 year old daughter went to work for a cleaning service in August. I followed in September. We were being paid cash, less than minimum wage and working part time. And on top of that the woman who owned this company (our boss who we had to work with everyday) was extremely abusive and unpredictable due to a head injury so she claimed. Her coworker, a young woman with a criminal past that was also her best friend, kept trying to nail me and my daughter both, accusing us of not doing our jobs when we both did twice as much work as them. Needless to say, we are both unemployed again. And there are no jobs to be found. I have years of teachers aid experience, office management experience and accounts receivable but I am willing to do what I have to do to work. The job market is terrible!!!

ABFwife ... I bet you would love one of those $12 per hour jobs that strappy walked away from.

Nobody said it is not turf out there. I took an 8$hr temp job to but myself in the light to get hired. It worked.
I don't see anything from this Admin to get jobs except to spend more money that has flatly failed and will continue to fail in the end leaving us with Debt and high interest rate of inflation probably later this year. we are more worried about what guns our neighbors have and how to get them.
