Default How Voter Suppression Helped Produce the Lowest Turnout in Decades

This is pretty disturbing. I will admit in my search for news for TOL, I am daily coming across voter suppression articles and I never read them. Just too numerous. I continue to question what happened here in New Mexico. A very heavily Hispanic and Native American state, always a blue state, and now a complete flip. Also very low voter turnout. Yes our governor that won re-election was the first Latina Governor in the nation and they pushed that and pushed that but she is conservative, truly did nothing for the state in her last four years and I am quite sure will continue to do nothing for our state. So many people like myself are questioning how this person could be re-elected that FB was lighting up on election night with accusations of a rigged election. I for one thought the same thing. It is becoming very clear that it was rigged, rigged with Koch backing, which also rigged voter suppression. Just way too many things coming to light and what do we all do about it?
On Tuesday, older, white voters — who traditionally support Republicans — went to the polls in droves, while turnout among traditionally Democratic groups — the young, the minoritized, and women — was down. Indeed, overall turnout declined to an estimated 36.6% of eligible voters, the lowest rate of participation since the 1940s, despite the $3 billion spent by candidates, political parties, and super PACs.
While a partisan may be quick to frame this issue as Democrat versus Republican, it is about so much more. Warnock wasn’t wrong when he called the right to vote a basic right. But legislators in Texas and Georgia and elsewhere, who have targeted the most vulnerable in our society, disagree. These legislators aren’t inflicting physical pain upon potential non-white voters, à la Bull Connor, but are undoubtedly wreaking havoc upon the civic lives of millions. And this American attack on the human rights of other Americans will only get worse.
