Bernie Sanders challenges Trump to end GM’s federal contracts during Lordstown appearance
LORDSTOWN — The crowd erupted in applause and chants of “Bernie” as Sen. Bernie Sanders entered the Lordstown High School auditorium Sunday to discuss campaign promises and to criticize the closing of the General Motors plant last month.

The Democratic presidential hopeful opened his remarks before a crowd of about 100 by saying the situation in Lordstown should be part of a national conversation because plants have shut down across the country. He told those in attendance they must decide if they will allow companies to close down profitable plants, ask for tax breaks and dictate trade policies.

He also mockingly called President Donald Trump a “tough guy” for shutting down the government which denied federal workers paychecks. Along with challenging Trump to no longer give federal contracts to GM, Sanders added he and others would make it illegal to do stock buybacks unless a company respects and protects the jobs of its workers.

“To him I say, to Donald Trump, you’re really a tough guy to shut down the federal government,” Sanders said. “You’re really a tough guy to deny tens and tens, hundreds and thousands of workers a paycheck. Let’s see how tough you are. Tell General Motors today ‘no more federal contracts.’ ”

Can Bernie Sanders Make Joe Biden’s Anti-Labor Trade Record Matter?

Joe Biden is campaigning as an old-school labor liberal — one who’s uniquely qualified to win back disaffected Obama-to-Trump voters in the Midwest. Since launching his candidacy last week, the Democratic front-runner has collected endorsements from major unions and seen a bump in the polls — one fueled, in no small part, by Democratic voters’ faith in his “electability.”

Biden is also a longtime champion of NAFTA, the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and China’s admission into the World Trade Organization. The Democratic Party pursued all three of those trade policies over the near-unanimous opposition of organized labor — a point that Donald Trump took pains to emphasize when campaigning against Clintonism in 2016. In fact, the Republican nominee effectively used NAFTA as shorthand for the Democrats’ purported betrayal of its traditional working-class base. And those attacks, combined with his demagogic messaging on immigration, helped to reduce the salience of class resentment in the 2016 election, and send a critical mass of midwestern Obama voters into the GOP coalition.

Thus, it makes sense that Bernie Sanders is already focusing his fire on Biden’s “fair trade” bona fides. Casting the Democratic front-runner as a serial betrayer of industrial workers doesn’t just undermine Biden’s standing with a key interest group in the primary, but also challenges his claim to electability — which, polls show, is the No. 1 quality that Democratic voters are seeking in their standard-bearer this cycle.

    Sanders campaign officially unionizes
Sen. Bernie Sanders’s (I-Vt.) 2020 campaign has officially unionized, staff announced Wednesday.

The Sanders campaign said that management had reached a deal with staff on a union contract that addresses pay transparency, gender equality and mental health services, among other issues.

“We are proud of our workers and proud to uphold Bernie's commitment to collective bargaining rights and a strong labor movement,” said campaign manager Faiz Shakir. “Together, we have achieved some of the strongest standards for campaign workers in history and set the bar higher for the next generation of campaigners.

"When Bernie Sanders is in the White House, he will make it easier, not harder, to join a union and we look forward to running a campaign powered by union workers."

Bernie Sanders says he stands in ‘solidarity’ with Uber and Lyft drivers going on strike

Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont expressed support for Uber and Lyft drivers going on strike on Wednesday over work conditions and pay rates.

"Uber and Lyft drivers are struggling as they work for billion-dollar companies," the presidential hopeful said in a tweet on Wednesday. "These drivers are not 'independent contractors'—they are employees who deserve rights and benefits. I stand in solidarity with them as they strike today for a dignified life."

Wednesday's comment is in line with Sanders' routine criticism of mega-companies like Amazon, Walmart, and Disney over their treatment of workers.

As Uber prepares for its initial public offering (IPO), drivers in multiple cities— including New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco — are striking on Wednesday. The strikes are also expected to extend to other regions of the world, including the United Kingdom and parts of South America.

Bernie Sanders and AOC Want to Cap Credit Card Interest Rates at 15%

This absolutely needs to be done!!!

Senator Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.) and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) will introduce legislation on Thursday that, if passed, would cap credit card interest rates at 15%— a steep reduction from current levels, which float around 18%.

“There is no reason a person should pay more than 15% interest in the United States,” Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) said on Twitter. “It’s a debt trap for working people + it has to end.”

According to the Federal Reserve, Americans currently have more than $1 trillion in credit card debt.

In addition to the 15% cap, the proposal would also allow states to establish their own lower limits under legislation, and grant the U.S. Postal Service the ability to offer savings and checking accounts. The cap, according to Sanders, would be the same as the one that Congress imposed on credit unions in 1980.

IMO 15% is still way too much, how about 6% with a max of $500 to $1,000 line of credit.....way too easy to get yourself in debt way over your head with credit card...before you know it your in "Quicksand" and you can't get out of debt!

My husband has a sears card that they suckered him into taking one day because you get those purchase points (the biggest scam ever). The interest rate is around 30%, astronomical even though we have excellent credit. I will have them paid off this year and it is being cut up and thrown in the trash. Now that should be illegal!!!

Bernie Sanders: Biden’s reported climate plan ‘will doom future generations’

I am not here to change anyone's mind. Just here to inform. There is plenty we post on this site that you never see on tv.

Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and other progressives slammed Joe Biden on Friday over his still-unreleased climate plan — in yet another sign of how central the issue has become in the crowded Democratic race for president.

The jousting followed a report by Reuters that said the presumed front-runner would seek a “middle ground,” largely similar to the Obama administration’s approach to climate change, in hopes of appealing to both environmentalists and the blue-collar voters who elected Donald Trump.

Biden’s camp quickly disputed the story, including one of the two Biden advisers whom Reuters cited as sources for the article. But the episode offered a preview of the friction that Biden may face with much of the party’s activist base if he tries to continue the policies Barack Obama once championed, which left a role for fuels like natural gas in the nation’s energy mix.

Sanders, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Corte of New York and other environmentalists quickly torched Biden, saying the reported details of his plan fell far short of the urgent steps needed to save the planet.

“There is no ‘middle ground’ when it comes to climate policy,” Sanders tweeted Friday. “If we don't commit to fully transforming our energy system away from fossil fuels, we will doom future generations.”

Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez Pick a Fight With the Loan Sharks

Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are introducing legislation to put a 15 percent interest rate cap on all consumer loans.

The legislation, called the Loan Shark Prevention Act, is a shot fired in the war between self-identified democratic-socialist lawmakers and the economic elite. With their national profile rising and their base growing, the former are seeking to make it clear to working-class people that they will fight tooth and nail to protect them from Wall Street predation.
“You’ve got all these guys in their three-piece suits who are now the new loan shark hoodlums that we used to see in the movies,” said Sanders. “You know in the movies, they say, ‘I’ll break your kneecaps if you don’t pay back.’ Well, I don’t know that they break kneecaps —”

“But now they’ll take your home,” Cortez said.

“Or maybe do something even worse,” Sanders replied. “Maybe pull the plug on your mom who needs medical treatment. So let’s be clear about what we’re talking about. We’re talking about economic brutality.”
