Default Understanding the Existential Threat Trump Poses to a Beleaguered Labor Movement

I think I can speak for several of us on this board that this is exactly what we have been saying. That the problems didn't start with Trump but they sure are going to grow under his administration. But instead words are put in our mouths (or typing fingers) that we are only blaming Trump for the labor problems in this country. And that we have blinders on. No blinders here. This man is gutting anything and everything to do with labor.

As nativist right-wing populism surges across the Global North amidst the exhaustion of social democracy and “Third Way” liberalism, the United States finds itself at the forefront. Elsewhere, right populist parties have led in the polls, as with the Front National in France and the PVV in the Netherlands, or played key roles in seismic political events, as with UKIP and Brexit. But so far, only in the US has the right populist wave captured a major political party and ridden it to power. The improbable election of Donald Trump reflects deep crises within the US political system, but also this broader crisis of modern liberalism.

The early months of the Trump administration have been chaotic, but one thing remains clear: despite Trump’s rhetorical appeals to the working class, actual workers and unions have reason to be worried. His public pronouncements about bringing back coal and manufacturing jobs are based on pure sophistry, while his less public moves to gut labor regulations and workers’ rights will hurt workers. Labor’s dire situation predates Trump by decades, but it is likely that his accession to the Oval Office will further embolden labor’s foes, much as Ronald Reagan’s election did in the 1980s.

You think organized labor is in a grave position because that is what the Democratic party is telling you and you my friend are swallowing it hook line and sinker.. Don't get me wrong as I don't think the Republican party is any better..

It is simple numbers. Our numbers have been declining for years. With the loss of the bargaining unit in Charlotte being the most recent hit to our ranks. The effects RTW and proposed legislation on the horizon will reduce our numbers even further. That is reality not alternate fact.

Reality is the teamsters have nothing to sell if they did these nons would be breaking down the doors to join.At one time it was a great job, and hard to get, with better than average pay, exceptional benefits and great pension program, now its average to say the least. There is no shortage of drivers, no one wants to do it anymore. So blaming it all on legislation and Trump is BS.The Teamsters need to clean up their own act in order to survive.

I don't disagree with you but it does seem you blame Trump for everything.. The unions are gonna now have to sell themselves otherwise prove to the workers that they will indeed help them.. Many of these FedEx people in management use the whole YRc thing as why the workers don't need the union.. They tell them the union has failed the workers ..They know the upcoming shitstorm is about to hit.. I don't doubt you on that..I have said in the past that Trump is far from perfect.. Maybe it is time for the Democrats who say they are for the working people to prove it.. As I see Trump I believe he has a whole lot of things on his plate than worrying about the NLRB
. North Korea is the biggest risk to this country right now.. Where are the Democrats?? On television moaning about the Russians and their collusion conspiracies..Our government is in sad shape. Neither party wants to work with the other..
Back to Trump.. Now this is the way I think along with many of my family members. The more the negative crap of which is almost all unproven ,the more Iwill support him.. The more you post :(:(:(:( about him and make fun of him again the more I will support him..On another note there are always other problems in the world.. Other things that are far more important than what gets posted on a message forum. Our area took a big shock yesterday when that marine plane crashed in Miss. It was out of Newburgh.
