Default Unions Aren't Obsolete, They're Being Crushed by Right-Wing Politics

Ah, but there are still those that continue to deny this fact.

Even Democrats have largely remained silent about unions, which remain an important part of their base. The party's "Better Deal" plan to help ordinary workers that Democrats released earlier this year talked about raising the minimum wage, growing the economy, and fighting outsourcing, but didn't mention making sure workers had the ability to organize.

But a report released last month by the Economic Policy Institute, a think tank that focuses on the needs of low- and middle-income workers, points out just how relevant the labor movement remains. The decline of unions—which now represent just over one in ten US workers, down from one in five from 1983—has been less about their value for workers than the result of a concerted effort to destroy the labor movement.
Meanwhile, at the state and federal level, anti-union activists have pushed laws that make organizing unions more difficult. One big tool is "right to work" laws, which ban union contracts that require all employees in a workplace to pay a fee to the union for representing them. Without that contract language, it's easy for workers to "free ride," getting representation that they don't pay for and leaving the union without the funds it needs to function.
To bring more Americans into unions would probably take some significant changes in labor law. For example, the Employee Free Choice Act, defeated by the threat of a Republican filibuster in 2007, would have let workers form a union simply by signing up a majority of the workplace up. That would have circumvented the long election process that makes it easy for employers to mount a diapers-in-the-breakroom-style intimidation campaign.

I thought I would add this to your post ABFwife.

Letter: Organized labor, unions show power in unity

We recently celebrated Labor Day and the sacrifices labor has made to improve our lives. Fellow workers have devoted and sacrificed their lives to improve our well-being yet you'll find writers celebrating the decline of organized labor.

Are these authors reactionaries out to support President Donald Trump's kleptocratic agenda? Certainly. Are they writing from a position of economic privilege? Yup. Could they also be worried about America's desire to see their country be "...of the people, by the people, for the people ..." instead of some profit-making scam? Their greed is being recognized by everyday people — by the workers.

A recent Gallup poll was published that shows the majority of Americans like unions, and approval has been increasing since 2009. Why? Because people no longer believe the conservative nonsense that unions cheat workers. Because workers are seeing the damage "right-to-work" laws do to their ability to support their families. Because we are seeing fellow workers coming out to provide aid to others regardless of their identity. Because unions are recognized as the only way the 99 percent can have a voice in the age of Citizens United.

I'll add another article, worth the read.

The early months of the Trump administration have been chaotic, but one thing remains clear: despite Trump’s rhetorical appeals to the working class, actual workers and unions have reason to be worried. His public pronouncements about bringing back coal and manufacturing jobs are based on pure sophistry, while his less public moves to gut labor regulations and workers’ rights will hurt workers. Labor’s dire situation predates Trump by decades, but it is likely that his accession to the Oval Office will further embolden labor’s foes, much as Ronald Reagan’s election did in the 1980s.
Early indications have confirmed these suspicions, as the candidate who portrayed himself during the campaign as a tribune of the working class has packed his cabinet with billionaires and business leaders.
On the judicial front, Trump has nominated two reliably anti-union attorneys, William Emanuel and Marvin Kaplan, to fill vacancies on the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). They are likely to reverse recent pro-labor rulings holding parent companies liable for the labor practices of their franchisees and allowing student workers at private universities to organize.

Economically, union decline is a key reason that inequality has risen to levels also not seen since the Great Depression. Politically, it has undercut labor’s organizational clout. Not only are there fewer union voters, but unions are less able to educate and mobilize their existing members.

First, labor law reform is not happening, and anti-labor measures like a national right-to-work law are almost certain.
This is a long article, but if your a union person, right or left, it may help you understand why we, as union members ( or retired ) feel this Presidency, and the administration as a whole, will be destructive towards organized labor.

The Transpacific Partnership and givng Obama fast track Authority...would have been just as lethal to us as the GOP strategy......it would have been like a nuclear bomb taking out mass numbers at a time.......neither side is in it for us.....we need a labor party......and traditional left and right politics must be left out of that.......gay, minority, welfare, Obamacare stuff should not be a part of it imo........Gays and minorities have every right that we have in our shops...We have contracts which cover needs and costs of living, at least we are supposed to have that...but sadly due to both sides attacks on us...we hardly have that,,,,,,healthcare was supposed to be covered under our contracts..and done thru market.....so the welfare and Obamacare stuff should not be our stance to shove off the employers responsibility onto us...the taxpayer.....it is allowing corporations to skate at our expense.......Shoving our responsibility off and the companies we work for responsibilities off gives the politician our power and does nothing for our companies or unions.
Supporting illegal immigration is wrong to...for it is a support for the mistreatment of people with no rights...and they cannot have them rights by coming here the wrong way..so they are living an oppressed life...we should not support that...They are another reason for our decline of power...their existence helps the company side...not our side.....they help keep our wages down....

I think I would have to agree with you on that last paragraph. I do think by people coming here illegally, for the most part it sets them up for oppression from employers (unless they are union). It sets a whole lot of things into motion that are probably not good for anyone. On the other hand, although I do not condone breaking laws and entering countries illegally, they come here to have a better life and despite what they might deal with here, it is better than what they were dealing with where they came from.

There are proper channels and everybody came here to have a better life than where we came from.......and there are proper channels everybody took....yet there are hundreds of thousands or millions who are not doing it the right way.....and I highly doubt that they do not know the right channel.
They just want to do it their own special way.....and their own special way of hiding is not helping them or anyone else to the fullest extent that could be had.

I do not hate these people.....but I do not approve. We have a government and we have rules and they must abide by the rules that are set.....we pay lots of dollars in taxes to lots of different government programs and agencies to make sure that we let in and don't let in different people ....supposedly they would be experts paid to ensure that our nation is doing it in a healthy way(so many of these demographics, so many of those demographics)......all that money is wasted when none of the studies can add up due to a huge amount of peoples coming who are not documented......many programs are affected...and most probably programs for our most needy are being run with budgets which cannot be anywhere near accurate with 11 million poor illegals running around tapping into that money.
This is also not a victimless crime.

I go to some places which seem to me to have hundreds of immigrants working there...And it is as if I am a stranger in my own area once entering the property......The language is different and the people are all the same...but not the same as me.....and I feel no more comfortable around these people that I'd feel at a country club.....I am an outsider.....pushed to the back of the line and not served quickly as if I spoke Spanish. One out of 20 of them might be willing to deal with me...the rest ignore me......and I look at them and treat them no differently than the people whose jobs they took.....I think they have fear................and if the illegal stuff was stopped...they would not be here in fear....but supporting it just keeps the problem going....and it is not helping people...it is hurting people imo. It is chaining people.....and costing lots of money to people who have come here the legal route and become citizens..

Some may be familiar with a Phrase: Half measures availed us nothing.

Coming here illegally is a half measure.........and is wasting many peoples lives.
