Default Right to Work, Wrong for Labor: The Decline of Unions in the “United” States

Once upon a time, labor unions were among the most powerful political forces in the United States. Their rise helped usher in an era of social change that dramatically reduced American poverty and injustice between the mid 1930s and the late 1960s, from the New Deal to the Civil Rights Movement to LBJ’s Great Society. But in the last 40 years, unions have come under attack from a multitude of forces, and organized labor in the U.S. is now only a shell of its former self. This precipitous decline has wreaked havoc on the lives of the American working class, causing wage stagnation, worsened employee benefits, and massive growth in income inequality.

“Right to Work” laws force unions to represent everyone in their workplace for no cost at all. Where enacted, they have created a free-rider problem that has made it nearly impossible for unions to raise the money they need to function. The motivation to pass “Right to Work” laws is not a heartfelt effort to promote worker freedom, but rather another way for Republican legislatures to promote business interests at the expense of the working class.
Unions are fundamental to the health of a free market democracy. Their recent decline signals the growing influence of business in government and the rise of a strengthened American aristocracy.

I kinda think what gets lost in the translation is that there are many unions that use dues money for political contributions.. If more unions followed what the Teamsters do then it might change a persons outlook on unions..If they can't afford to operate then how do they contribute to political candidates..

If you google for any information about union dues and contributions for political purposes, what you get are links to the conservative web sites meant to deceive you and provide propaganda to sway people against the unions.

The first three web site that came up were:
"unionfreeamerica" What else needs to be said about this web site. Unable to find source of funding, but I'll bet it's from a far right source.

"unionfacts" The Center for Union Facts (CUF) is an American interest group that is critical of labor unions. It is one of several advocacy and public relations groups founded by Richard Berman, whose Washington, D.C.-based public affairs firm, Berman and Company, specializes in research, communications and advertising.

"nationalreview" National Review Institute was founded by William F. Buckley Jr. in 1991 to engage in policy development, public education, and advocacy that would advance the conservative principles he championed.

All three are far right conservative web sites and organizations that promote and distribute false and misleading lies.

The right has as many misleading websites as the left does.. Once again it goes to what you want to believe.. Most people are sheeple, they flow with the flock..

Here's a list of the top 50 political donors. Teamsters didn't even make it.. but many other unions did..
