Default Judge: Paid voting leave for nm workers extends to local elections

Yeah New Mexico! Progress. And more progress is on the horizon I do believe. After 8 years of a republican mayor in ABQ, looks like a democrat might win tomorrow. And people are fed up with our republican two term governor, and I think a dem is going to win this time around. I have no idea how either of these people were elected for two terms. They have pretty well run NM into the ground.

A ruling last week ensures that New Mexico state workers must be paid when taking time off to vote in any election. The ruling came after two plaintiffs sued the state over a paid administrative leave policy that excluded local elections. Workers Independent News Executive Producer Frank Emspak says this decision is particularly significant in a time of increasing efforts at voter suppression:

“The United States is unique among western democracies in not having voting on holidays. The judge’s decision in New Mexico to allow workers to be paid during working hours to vote is a step in the long fight to allow working people to access the ballot box without impediment, without penalty. Access is crucial to increasing participation in our democracy and giving the people the opportunity to express their point of view. This issue of when you vote has been an issue for about a hundred and fifty years because this voting on Tuesday has always been seen as an impediment to working people voting. Everybody understood that. It requires, in many cases, a loss of wages—essentially a tax.”

I've worked a number of jobs day and nights. It's never been a problem to vote.

I remember when election day was a paid day off for everyone.. I have never had a problem either.. But every state is different.. Son told me that where he works they took his lunch break away from them.. A ten hour shift and they get two 15 minute breaks.. But he lives in a right to work or fire at will state.. Virginia.. Probably not even allowed to vote..

Some people work hours that don't let them vote. Sure there is early voting but why is this even a problem for you? I don't have a problem with it. They want more people to participate in voting, maybe they should make it easier for people to do just that.

So, if it was negotiated into your labor agreement that you were allowed time to exercise your right as an American, would you stay working, or go to the polls to vote?

Let's face it. Some people don't want everyone with the right to vote, to be able to exercise that freedom.

Personally, I vote by mail in advance. That is available here by the nature of my ( now retired ) work.
Geez, I hope that doesn't offend Mr. Strappy.

Although I live in PA I have always worked in New York.. For as many jobs I have had I have never been denied time to vote.. With the exception of RedStar where I ran the road and was able to do the early vote thing.. Like I have said years back election day was a holiday,a real holiday rather than a retail sales day..
