Default The Pennsylvania Valley That Became A Bellwether For Trump

    https://www.theamericanconservative....her-for-trump/
This is a story right up my alley of course.
Home. It has changed. I can't believe how YRC messed things up with all this distribution coming. They came back for them concessions and destroyed any hopes of getting new drivers....I almost think they'd profit more if they came back and asked to give us another $5/hour.. It's slow now but won't stay that way long. Maybe they planned way ahead with the world elite transportation investors and planned on killing off driving jobs due to the automated trucks and distribution which will be here before they're even done building all of the distribution centers which are going up from Jersey to Harrisburg to Pottsville.

I could post this whole story because I like it..but I'll just post a little. It gets into past and present.

This unremitting demographic change makes the Lehigh Valley a perpetual toss-up in presidential elections. But its shifting voting patterns—driven in part by blue-collar families, affluent transplants, and Latino neighborhoods—often predict statewide outcomes. Northampton County, for example, has voted for the winning presidential candidate in nearly every election since 1932. “Northampton is a great microcosm of the state, and to a slightly lesser degree, the country,” said Christopher Borick, director of the Muhlenberg College Institute of Public Opinion. “I think Northampton is the bellwether county.”
Since the Great Recession, Northampton County has reaped the benefits of the Lehigh Valley’s economic transformation, marked by its greatest period of growth since the early 20th century. It’s now among the nation’s fastest growing regions, with a $41.2 billion GDP—more than Vermont and Wyoming. Due to its advantageous location, not far from metro New York, the Lehigh Valley is also among the nation’s largest logistics hubs, ranking second globally for growth in industrial rents. Its highway network is packed with trucks at all hours, which serve 40 percent of U.S. consumers along the eastern seaboard. These trucks drive to and from multi-million square foot distribution centers—such as FedEx, Walmart, Amazon, and QVC—sprouting off highway exits and employing thousands.
Though prosperous days are here again, regional discontent has intensified with economic and demographic change. In particular, industrial and suburban sprawl imperils the Lehigh Valley’s formerly agricultural character, now accounting for less than a quarter of the region’s 726 square miles. Massive distribution centers, the size of several football fields, are built seemingly overnight on farmland. The structures house new employers, but their presence—compounded by increasing traffic—divides the region. The working class, for example, questions the quality of jobs. “There’s a lot of job opportunities,” one maintenance worker recently told the Times, “but it’s harder to make a good wage.” Newer residents, meantime, express dismay over the proliferation of warehouses near suburban developments. In response, several townships have approved income tax increases to preserve open space.

These newer residents ensure the Lehigh Valley’s toss-up status in presidential races. Northampton County’s cultural foundation remains traditionally working-class, but scores of younger professionals continue to relocate—or stay—for the region’s employment opportunities, affordable housing, and excellent schools. The Lehigh Valley has become a refuge for people fleeing metro New York’s unsustainable costs. But these transplants are hardly loyal to Republicans, as reflected in post-Trump election cycles. In 2018,
I could post more but there is way too much to post.
Automation will destroy these jobs as fast as they came in The only way to slow that would be to organize....and although a big name may be on the sign...the workers are working for somebody else such as maybe Prologis...or NFI....or XPO....or DSC......organize and they'll just throw them out and bring in one of the others.

Distribution warehouses are all over PA. When I go south we normally take 81 south. All the way through Virginia you will see brand new distribution centers...78 Also. Help wanted signs for warehouse workers and truck drivers at just about every exit. Not burger flipping jobs ..

The corporate anti-union mentality, which the Dems have done nothing about my whole life, and the GOP encourages, is what brings the animosity, uncertainty, and division imo.
If unions were encouraged and it was made easier to organize, and faster.....I think we would have a much happier economic mindset and nation. It's the allowing business to do whatever they want which brings the instability and anger and pessimism.
Organize all these distribution and driving jobs and stability and faith could be restored......and the automation slowed......but the big investors don't care about the nation nor the people. They care about getting rich quick. And that divides the nation. Let the people join together and organize so they too, can be in a big money lobby which can influence their economics. But the big shots don't want it...They want to have the sole ownership of politicians.....they have since the 70's........now we have a full blown socialist running for President.....the antiunion mentality since the 70's brought this imo.

This is another complication for New Penn's system which used 45's. The 45 is ultimate for picking up the old LTL small 1-5 skid order manufacturing stuff....but these new warehouses deal alot with skids tall for OTR 53's.....and they don't like narrow short 45's.. And alot of times it is more than LTL....it is half to full trailers or more than 45 ft...so they want big trailers. ..if we go deliver with 45's and show up for pickups they cry about no room. And alot of their lift equipment is too tall to get in our 12 6" trailers...or they use riding jacks which the blades are too thick to fit in the side slots of skids to turn any.

Come on Slave,If Trump saw a way to make money off Socialism,he would be a socialist...He has no morality vain other than money and power,NONE AT ALL...Trump is the ugly face of Capitalism at the moment, but he is far from the cause of it nor does he hold the REAL POWER,which is reserved for the nameless, faceless, corporate oligarch elites that CONTROL our lives and our government...Trump is a symptom of the disease that is destroying the Working Class,NOT THE CAUSE...

We DO NOT have a democracy in this country...This country runs on capitalism orchestrated by the wealthy 1%...and just look at all the wonderful things capitalism has provided us,and the rest of the world under our thumb...homelessness...poverty...lack of good jobs...a non-living minimum wage...one of the most expensive healthcare systems...deteriorating infrastructure with at least 10,000 communities saddled with lead-laden corroding pipes...decimation of Unions...a crumbling middle and working class...forever wars and a world on the brink of self-destruction...That is what capitalism has done for us...if all that sounds good to you, have at it by all means....Me-Bernie/Tulsi-2020

The economy is BOOMING for people who are pretty damn comfortable to begin with and are already well-off...none of them rose up from the ranks of poverty level lower class...ask a Walmart or Target or Dollar General or Amazon or any one in retail or a warehouse or small business worker or a $16-$17 starting pay tractor trailer driver how much their life has improved?...or one of the millions of Americans with credit card DEBT,student loan DEBT,medical DEBT...or EVEN the millions of Americans who can't even AFFORD health insurance...or an elderly person on Social Security, which Republicans are looking to CUT...or a public school teacher...or the thousands upon thousands that are homeless...

It's a and has always been a 'WALL ST. ECONOMY'...the stock market is NOT,I repeat,is NOT an accurate gauge for anything or anybody but the rich elites and Wall St...It has NOTHING to do with what's going on in Main St...the economy is based on BUBBLES,DEBT,and STOCK BUYBACKS...yes,our economy is so successful that the FED has to keep PRINTING FUNNY MONEY to PROP up the banks, and most of that money goes straight into FINANCIAL MARKET SPECULATION,only accelerating the greatest transfer of wealth this country has EVER SEEN...What could possibly go wrong?...Bottom Line?...our economy is a ''House of Cards'' and on the verge of collapsing, and people can't see the obvious...anybody who swallows the BS coming from both corrupt political parties is in for rude awakening

I agree with a whole lot of what you say....but socialism is not a positive fixer of anything...It is dismal, dull, boring....and it's not something I'll go for.
I believe collapse could come. The debt is never paid. No attempt to fix it.
Tell YRC to quit worrying about debt and profit...theres no need for change because the government doesn't...they don't care about debt...apparently there is no consequence....why should anybody worry about for closure on a home or repossession of car.....if the system doesn't punish government...how can it punish somebody else not paying back debt?. Such as a person behind on mortgage or or car payments or YRC not being able to pay their debt.
If $20 trillion is ok for the nation......nobody else should give anything back either....just keep spending..right?
That makes the money/debt/ownership/........very much something to not believe in.
Just as Martin Luther said....Indulgences for the rich are enough to create major change......and King George did enough for the Founding Fathers to revolt....and the debt piled on so high on Germany to create Hitler....
Things eventually come to a breaking point.
We are very close it seems.
My stance is to go back and do it the right way.
Not to "progress" into socialism and communism.
Capitalism and socialism have leaders at the top.
I see no attractive leaders to socialism.....i think that is a more miserable path.
The benefits of Bernie are maybe quicker union building...and maybe saving pensions......otherwise there is too much stuff he stands for which I cannot support....I see forceful government serving resentful angry not so good people...if Bernie is elected...not love...not happiness...just equality forced by angry people who want more than they put in or want to put in....I don't see happiness under Bernie......day to day drudgery with even less ways out than we have now.

An observation/speculation I have relates to the distribution centers from Easton to Harrisburg..and all points in between........I tend to think the planning is fairly detailed...and affects more than meets the eye. And the planning is probably at least a decade or more ahead of time...I don't think it all happens spontaneously through market....its planned by government and huge money people. Probably on a globalist money level.
I tend to think the opening of the dairy plant for Wal-Mart which may sink these Lebanon and Barks dairy farmers may be planned to take their land for more development from Easton to Harrisburg....Primo huge lands will become available for the continued development imo.
Probably not a coincidence they are out of the milk business selling to Wal-Mart...probably planned imo.

Sorry Slave, the capitalists had their chance...Those of us who were around in the 60s and 70s are now in our own 60s,70s,and 80s,and old folks don't carry out revolutions...most of us coasted thru the 1980s and 90s,making a living, raising kids, climbing the illusory ladder of success,or else struggling to just get by...by the late 70s the potential fire had mostly sputtered out because Unions were strong and the economy was good...

These days, fewer and fewer workers are Unionized, and now it's down to a feeble remnant...when 7% of the working class belongs to a Union, there is NO social mechanism for that same working class to do anything but march, protest, sign meaningless petitions and write meaningless comments like this online or on social media...

The only other outlet available is participating in a political campaign, either Corporate Republicans,Corporate Democrats,3rd Party(non-existent),or some other outliers...It's all so dispiriting, disillusioning and ineffective, that seldom does anything remotely decent emerge from any such activism..

Young people have to do the heavy lifting if anything is going to happen, and I suspect they're almost as divided on the issues as our own befuddled generation...there's just too much Corporate Propaganda smeared in our faces all day long, every effing day,so that being AWARE that it is propaganda consumes all the energy we have, and there's little left to even have some hint about how to organize in some effective way,and mainly who to organize...

With that being said,we aging boomers saw the world change on a dime, and no one saw it coming...I will always continue to believe in the 'Human Spirit',in it's potential to do the unexpected,to RISE UP out of nowhere and challenge these greed-driven corporate monsters who use EVERYTHING in their power to suppress it...now again, this time as an old man instead of a young one...I sense that...''Somethin's Happening Here''...If so,I hope to live to see it...Bernie/Tulsi-2020...

I always loved Neil Young..seen him maybe 8 times.......but I have alot of thoughts on what you saw in your generation...and lived with the aftermath. It's what I knew....its what we all knew and were taught from all kinds of directions and sources....but that brought us here...and even the hippie beliefs were propaganda.imo.
Propaganda from a not good side. A divisive side.....I have alot of ideas on what you saw and how we were trained to see and believe....and we were trained.
Too many thoughts for me to put here..alot of conspiracy theories with many facts pointing the same direction.
    Conspiracies involving religion....capitalism...socialism. Communism..globalism.
But I will post if I can ever put it together with clearer facts without using conspiracy sites.
But I think our government was on both sides....the war side and the hippie side...and they train both sides..to start.
