Stop & Shop workers win a public relations war during strike

The Stop & Shop Strike ended Easter Sunday after the company and union came to terms with the help of a federal mediator.

Union officials claimed a big win for the thousands of workers it represented in the job action.

“Today is a powerful victory for the 31,000 hardworking men and women of Stop & Shop who courageously stood up to fight for what all New Englanders want -- good jobs, affordable health care, a better wage, and to be treated right by the company they made a success,” a spokesman for the United Food & Commercial Workers International Union said in a press release.

Was Stop & Shop strike a turning point?

A good friend of ours here has always said to me that we have to hit rock bottom before moving up again (the unions). I think the unions have done that and maybe we are on the upside now.

THE STOP & SHOP STRIKE earlier this year cost the company about $100 million and resulted in a contract the workers could agree to, but whether the power on display at Bay State grocery stores was an aberration or a sign of resurgent force in private sector labor is an open question.

For decades, private sector labor has been on a decline around the United States, but the Stop & Shop strike gained big buy-in from the public and politicians. Jeff Bollen, who is president of the United Food & Commercial Workers Local 1445, noticed a connection between his union reaching an agreement with Stop & Shop and then later gaining some concessions from Macy’s.

“We believe when the strike ended, and we won that strike, that Macy’s came right back to the table and settled – the best contract we’ve ever gotten from them,” Bollen said.

Bollen and Massachusetts AFL-CIO President Steve Tolman both sat down for an interview on the most recent episode of the Codcast to provide organized labor’s viewpoint on that strike and where the labor movement stands today.

Placed in the general Stop & Shop thread.
I don't know if this just applies to New Jersey stores, or across the chain.
First it says New Jersey, then it says the northeast workers. Either way, many unions have stepped up to address this isse.

Unionized Stop & Shop workers get raises, more paid sick leave amid coronavirus crisis
Certain unionized employees at Stop & Shop and Peapod in New Jersey are getting a 10% pay increase and two additional weeks of paid sick leave during the coronavirus crisis.
The United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) labor union, which represents employees in industries such as grocery and retail, announced on Saturday that the agreement was reached with Stop & Shop. The union said the deal will affect 70,000 workers across New England, New York and New Jersey.
It was not immediately clear how many workers are impacted by the agreement in New Jersey. A union spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Instead of making a stand alone thread over this news story, I am placing here.
Seems that credit card skimmers were detected in a few Stop & Shop stores, several in New Jersey, followed by Connecticut and Massachusetts.
Adding those devices, in front of checkers cashiers, would seem an unlikely possibility. However, it could have been done by contractors that enter the stores at night to stock shelves or perform other duties. ( Just speculation )

Illegal credit card skimmers found at 3 Stop & Shop stores in N.J.
Your credit card may have been compromised if you made a purchase at one of three Stop & Shop stores in northern New Jersey recently.
That’s because illegal credit card skimming devices were found at stores in Berkeley Heights in Union County, Bloomfield in Essex County and Clifton in Passaic County, the company announced Friday. The devices, known as “shimmers,” are attached to legitimate credit card terminals so data can be collected whenever a person swipes a card.
Stop & Shop said it removed the devices once they were found and reviewed surveillance video to determine who installed them and how long they had been at each store. Law enforcement was also notified, the company said.

A total of five stores — the three in New Jersey, one in Connecticut and another in Massachusetts — had the devices. Pin pads were checked at all locations to ensure that no other additional shimmer devices were attached, the company said.
The link contains the listing of stores.
