Pilots union asks judge to deny Allegiant’s request to block strike
The union representing Allegiant’s pilots asked a federal judge to toss out the Las Vegas-based airline’s request to block a strike, union representatives said Tuesday.

The Airline Professionals Association Local 1224 and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Airline Division filed a motion to dismiss Allegiant’s complaint, arguing that the federal court lacks jurisdiction over the dispute.

The move comes after roughly 95.5 percent of the pilots represented by Teamsters Local 1224 voted in support of a strike amid allegations that Allegiant had stalled efforts to update its scheduling system.

The dispute centers on how Allegiant schedules its pilots through an in-house system based on the carrier’s “must-fly” days, which require all pilots at a particular base airport to fly regardless of their seniority with the company.

Default Allegiant pilots post Las Vegas billboards to protest airline

Fed up with what they call “blatant disregard” to updating their scheduling system, pilots working for Allegiant Air took to the roads to get their message out.

Teamsters Local 1224, which represents Allegiant Air pilots, commissioned eight billboards across the Las Vegas Valley reading: “Allegiant Air, Stop the Unfair Labor Practices. Stop Testing Our Patience.” The billboards went up Dec. 1 and are scheduled to be in place at least through the holidays.

The billboards stem from an ongoing issue regarding how Allegiant schedules its pilots — through a system not based on seniority. That has led to senior pilots not receiving days they requested off, as the Allegiant system, unlike most air carriers, requires that all pilots be at a particular base airport regardless of seniority, the union said.

In August 2016 the union brought the first labor contract to Allegiant, which included changing the scheduling system.

Default Teamster Dispatchers, Allegiant Air Reach Agreement In Principle

LAS VEGAS, March 6, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- The Teamsters Union and Allegiant Air reached an agreement in principle yesterday for the 34 dispatchers employed at Allegiant. This will be the first contract for the dispatchers since they voted to join the Teamsters.

"I'm proud of our dispatchers," said Capt. David Bourne, Director of the Teamsters Airline Division. "These workers fought bravely to get their union and now they're close to getting their first contract. I'm glad we've been able to work productively with the company to get these negotiations to this point."

"I'd like to thank the negotiating committee for all of their hard work at the table," said Bob Fisher, Airline Division International Representative and Lead Negotiator. "The committee was able to work professionally and proficiently with company negotiators to resolve outstanding issues. I am looking forward to working with the airline to finalize this agreement and deliver a long-awaited contract."

The Teamsters will work with the company in the next few weeks to finalize the agreement and determine final contract language which will go to the membership for a vote.

Allegiant settles with union; pilots blocked from striking

Allegiant Air has settled a lawsuit against the Teamsters with union pilots agreeing not to strike over changes in the airline's crew-scheduling system.

A federal magistrate judge in Las Vegas signed an order Friday that ends the case and makes permanent an injunction against a strike or work slowdown.

Allegiant agreed to drop a claim against the president of Teamsters local 1224, and the union and its local agreed to drop a counterclaim against Allegiant.

The Las Vegas-based discount airline sued the Teamsters last year after pilots voted to authorize a strike. Allegiant said just the threat of a strike could hurt ticket sales, and a judge issued a temporary order blocking a strike.

Allegiant and the union are continuing to negotiate over the scheduling issue.

Allegiant, dispatchers come to terms on collective bargaining agreement

Two years after negotiations began, Allegiant Airlines and its dispatchers have come to terms on a new collective bargaining agreement.

The first approved contract between Allegiant and the 34 dispatchers represented by the International Brotherhood Teamsters will become effective on May 1 and carries a five-year term, Allegiant announced Thursday. Terms of the contract were not released.

“We applaud the efforts of all who came to the negotiating table to craft this agreement,” Maurice J. Gallagher Jr., Allegiant chairman and CEO, said in a statement. “This is an excellent example of all parties collaborating effectively and with great dedication, resulting in a contract that supports our team members, keeps us competitive across the industry and enables company goals.

With dispatchers carrying out a vital day-to-day function for the airline, the airline is pleased to have the agreement taken care of after a .

“Our team of dispatchers is at the core of Allegiant’s operation,” said Michael Wuerger, vice president, operations control center. “They keep our flights, crews and passengers moving safely and efficiently in real time. We appreciate the dedication they bring to work each day, and with today’s agreement, look towards a bright future together.”

The process of negotiating a first collective bargaining agreement for Allegiant dispatchers began in 2017. The parties resumed negotiations in January 2019 following the failed ratification of a prior tentative agreement reached between the parties in May 2018.

A new Las Vegas teamster local for these pilots.

Allegiant Air Pilots Announce Formation of Teamsters Local 2118
At the request of the pilots at Allegiant Air, Teamsters General President James P. Hoffa and the Teamsters General Executive Board approved the formation of Teamsters Local 2118. There are over 1,100 pilots who will be members of the union which will be headquartered in Las Vegas.
"Allegiant Air has done exceptionally well during the decade and that wouldn't have been possible without the exceptional service of their flight crews," said Capt. David Bourne, Teamsters Airline Division Director. "The company is in an excellent position to expand market share over the long-term and the formation of Local 2118 will ensure that they continue to receive the membership services and collective bargaining representation that they need during this period of growth."
A low-cost regional carrier, Allegiant Air is one of the ten largest passenger airlines in North America. In addition to representing the flight crews, Teamsters also represent the company's mechanics and dispatchers.
