Default Teamsters Open 29th International Convention

Everybody wants to be a Teamster. Well how about making freight proud again.

(LAS VEGAS) Ė The International Brotherhood of Teamstersí 29th International Convention kicked off today at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas with excitement and resolve to continue the fight for workers.

More than 1,600 delegates and 4,000 retirees and guests from across the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico have gathered this week to reflect on the unionís successes since the last convention in 2011 and chart the course for the future.

Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa announced that the union had organized more than 300,000 workers in the past decade, including recent victories for 13,500 San Bernardino County, Calif. public employees; 2,000 parking workers in Boston; and 1,700 nurses in San Diego, among others.

Teamsters Talk Political Power During Convention’s First Day

Politics and policy were front and center during the first day of the 29th International Convention here today as thousands of Teamsters lauded the union’s support for a platform that calls for more infrastructure investment and election contributions by members while calling out lawmakers who would ship jobs overseas or hamper collective bargaining.

Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa told attendees the last five years have been a time of success for the union. But there is still a lot of work to be done.

“We have to make new pledges, new promises,” he said. “We need to organize, but there are new journeys to be won. Let’s pledge to say we will get out to vote and win!”
