  • The best of New Mexico !

I read this great piece about the beauty of New Mexico.
There is a reason they call it "The Land of Enchantment". One day I would like to explore more of the hidden gems this state offers.
What I saw years ago was though the windshield of a truck. Beauty lay in the back roads, the hidden small towns, the history.
This story is about an impressive bridge near Taos.

The Tallest, Most Impressive Bridge In New Mexico Can Be Found Near The Town Of Taos
Just when you think the Land of Enchantment couldn’t get any more, well, enchanting, something quickly reminds you of New Mexico’s beautiful and fascinating appeal. Food, natural features, historic landmarks, and superb architecture all prompt us to think of the state’s allure.
One such location? The Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, a beautifully engineered landmark that also just happens to be the highest in the state.
As its name suggests, the bridge spans the stunning Rio Grande Gorge, which is about a 15 to 20-minute drive from Taos.
The Rio Grande Gorge Bridge stretches 1,280 feet in length and is part of U.S. Highway 64.
The year following its construction and dedication, it was nominated for and won an award in the American Institute of Steel Construction's annual Prize Bridge competition. The jury also noted its beauty, saying it has “well-balanced symmetry” and “fits into the gorge in an aesthetic and pleasing manner.”
New Mexico is home to 46 national historic landmarks and each is fascinating in their own way. Read about some of our favorites in 11 Historical Landmarks You Absolutely Must Visit In New Mexico and let us know which is your top pick!
My wanderlust is kicking in. Another destination has been added to my bucket list.

I am certainly biased because I live here but I have been to several states out west and many are beautiful but not in the same way as New Mexico. There is a feeling here, a spirit here, a charm here and it grabbed my soul the first time I visited back in 1991. Despite our poverty and other problems, I find this state to have an affect on so many people as it did me. It casts it's spell on you and you are forever hooked. Thank you for the post!

This is another article from "Only in your state". This lists the scenic by-ways many of us love to wander. Those magical two lane back roads that show the real America, not the 4 lane interstate version.
Seems New Mexico has quite a few roads that qualify as scenic by-ways. Here are 9 of them.
Several by-ways have over a hundred of miles of road and adventure, including the famous Route 66. The list even includes the "Chain of Craters Backcountry Byway", a 33 mile unpaved back country road, accessible with a good 4 x 4, when it's dry !

These 9 Beautiful Byways In New Mexico Are Perfect For A Scenic Drive
As the fifth largest state in the country, New Mexico covers 121,590 square miles. You could combine the nine smallest states in the nation and New Mexico would still be bigger! There’s a lot of land to explore here and the best way to see it is by car. We hope that these 9 scenic drives will inspire you to load up your vehicle and hit the road this summer.

Re: The best of New Mexico !

On the subject of New Mexico, we watched a wonderful movie last night that we had not watched in years. It truly captures the essence of New Mexico. I was still a Californian when my parents had moved here and my mother told me I had to watch it because it captures New Mexico. Once I moved here I totally agreed. Now I do not live in a small Hispanic village such as the one in this movie but my daughter did until a few days ago. My town is much more a farmer/cowboy town but we are surrounded by such villages. It is a Robert Redford movie and he is brilliant IMO. Anyway, to just enjoy beauty and a happy laid back movie, you have to watch it. And by the way, I absolutely love the little old man in this movie!!

On this cold Memorial Day morning, husband and I are watching this show from 2017 on our local Fox channel. For those curious about New Mexico and why I go on about it, this is a great episode about the Native American Culture in my state and the beauty too! Understand many of these tribes are suffering greatly from the Covid Virus.

Re: The best of New Mexico !

Have any of you heard of these? It's been a long time since I have been to Taos but I know we drove past some of these and I have seen many pictures of them. There has been a lot of talk in my house lately about earthships because my daughter has a friend who was excepted into a program to learn to build one and then covid put a crashing halt to that. I think these homes are amazing! There are some great pics in this post.

In Taos, a community of ‘voluntary anarchists’ is taking off-the-grid living to the next level
Just a few miles from where New Mexico’s Route 64 crosses the Rio Grande, a collection of alien looking buildings stand out in the otherwise desolate landscape. These houses—79 in total—are built partially into their natural surroundings, each with a wall of windows facing directly south.

While the houses, with their rounded corners and colorful walls made of cans and bottles, may look more like spaceships than human dwellings, the opposite is true: The buildings are even called “earthships.” Located just outside of Taos, this community—known as the Greater World Earthship Community—provides full-time housing to at least 130 people. Under the name Earthship Biotecture, it also hosts an academy in partnership with Western Colorado University, an internship program, and a visitor center open to the public.

Earthship Biotecture is almost completely self-sustainable—and it wants to teach you how to live off the grid, too.

Re: The best of New Mexico !

I must say, while watching the DNC last night, as they went through the roll call, I was so taken and felt so full of pride when they got to New Mexico. Unfortunately no video that I could find unless you want to sit through all 50 states. The native American started out speaking in his native language and then went on to English and talked about the diversity of the state, all while the Sandia mountains shown in the background. Yes, I live on the other side of the mountains. The green side as they say. I truly think New Mexico did the best job out of all the states. Loved it!!!!

Even though this "scenic drive" was mentioned in another post, this article has some pictures and tips to take a ride on the "Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway".

Now that the temperatures are feeling a little more bearable around the state, it’s the perfect time to head out for a drive with the windows down. Not sure where to head? If you are located in northern New Mexico, one easy day trip is along the Enchanted Circle.
You can find additional information about the byway, its sights, and events by visiting the Enchanted Circle website.

With husband gone so much since he went to work for ABF, it has been years since we have done this trip. Just telling him the other day how much I miss going up north. Thank you for the picture reminders of why I love this state so much!!!

This is the best of New Mexico. Electing those people who are representative of all the citizens of New Mexico.

New Mexico makes history by becoming first state to elect all women of color to the House

New Mexico just became the first state to elect all women of color to its House delegation. Three women announced they had won their districts early Wednesday morning, which were confirmed by the state.

Democratic incumbent Representative Deb Haaland, a member of the Pueblo Tribe, won reelection to her House seat against challenger Garcia Holmes. Haaland also made history in 2018 as one of the first Native American women elected to Congress.

"Tonight the people of New Mexico have chosen hope over fear, love over hate, community over division, and I am so honored that New Mexicans have chosen me to serve in our nation's 117th Congress," Haaland tweeted Tuesday night.

New Mexico has it's problem. Lots of poverty and Albuquerque has a problem with crime right now, thanks to a republican mayor who was in office for eight years and never did anything for Albuquerque and now our Democrat mayor cannot seem to get a grip on it no matter what he does, but despite that, we are a state full of diversity, I say much more than CA even, and people embrace each others cultures here. I have never, never been ashamed despite the negative comments I hear from people in nearby states, to be part of this wonderful, beautiful state!
