  • World class museums

Since the stay at home orders, some of us can get a little tired of TV and the endless commercials.
I decided to post a link to a museum that interests me, and one that has a particular interest, which is automobile related.
Of course there are racing museums that will find it's way into this thread, but my first visit will be to Stuttgart Germany, for the Mercedes-Benz museum.
A chance to see the first Motor-Wagen, and everything else throughout the history of Daimler, Benz and Maybach, is educational and informative.

Please add someplace you've been,or a place that may have an interest for any of us. The list is endless.

When we can get back to traveling, this place is close for many of us on the east coast.
Thinking of taking the scenic cruise up the coast of Maine ? Seafood shacks on the side of the road. Small quaint towns looking over the ocean. And from my perspective, a hidden gem of a museum that actually brings their displays outside and runs them. From old steam engines, to bi-planes and race cars too. That would be the museums yearly "Wings and Wheels Spectacular".
Located north of Portland, just off old US Rt. 1., the town of Owls Head is host to this museum.

This place has always been a favorite of mine. I have mentioned my love for aeronautics and all things that fly. This is just one ( of many ) museums in Washington DC that should be visited in your lifetime.

Today we travel down south, to Birmingham Alabama.
This is a private motorcycle and motorsports museum and race track.
          It's on my bucket list.

Here is the link to the museums web site with some great pictures from inside the facility.

So far I have been keeping all my picks in the wheels and wings arena. This one isn't any different.
Wiz has added a couple of "art" museums, of which there are many all across the US.
Doesn't anybody have an interesting museum they have visited or in their area ?
            Post them up !

Today is Florida's Kennedy Space Center. Not to be confused with NASA Houston Space Center museum.

Let's head to Pennsylvania. This is a small, yet large museum. Across the street is a scenic railroad that provides rides on an old steam train with period correct cars.
It's always a good time to visit the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. Afterward a ride on that steam train and some local snacks, like a whoopie pie.

Let's head over the west coast. This famous museum is in the heart of Los Angles. The Peterson Automotive Museum is a stand out, not just for the exhibits, but the architectural design of the building.
Here is a youtube tour of the underground portion of the museum. Followed by a link to the main web site.

Planes trains and automobiles ! What a great theme.
Now into the heartland of Indiana. Home of the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Museum. Housed in the original company showroom. Classic elegance and beauty.

Back to the state of Maine and a "truck" museum of sorts. This is the Cole Land Transportation museum in Bangor Maine.
I have visited this place and was surprised to see everything from trucks to motorcycles and cars. Galen Cole started Coles Express and the company was dominant in the northeast for a while, until the Teamsters called a strike on the company. It's a long story, but it started with them selling to Roadway regional group ( Spartan, Viking, Central Freight ) which then changed to all Viking, followed by American freightways and finally Fedex freight.

                        Re: World class museums

This is the month of May. Traditionally this is race month at Indy. The race has been postponed until August this year.
Now for those that have never witnessed "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing" it is a sight to behold. The size of the track, the crowds, the history.
While visiting the museum you can also take a tour of the track and grounds. Only until you stand on the track, will you understand the size, length and how enormous it is.
Interesting information. The race is called the "Indianapolis 500", yet the track is actually located in the town of Speedway, which is a suburb of Indianapolis.

Here is a truck museum in North Carolina that was started by Carolina Freight Carriers Corporation for a 50th anniversary celebration.
Housed in the original gas station where Carolina Freight had its humble beginnings, you can explore over 7500 square feet of vintage trucking memorabilia covering over seven decades.

Time to visit another great museum.
This race oriented museum operates their vehicles on a monthly basis ( when open ! ) and allows visitors to see and hear them running.
I have even seen a show on Chasing Classic cars with Wayne Carini showcasing this place.
Now the good part for me is it's located in Philadelphia, not far from the airport.

In the early days of transportation and vehicles, there were hundreds of manufacturers from all over the country.
At one time or another, there were at least 30 different manufacturers in Buffalo NY region. None have survived, but there is a great museum for one of the finest made motorcars of the time. The Pierce-Arrow Motor Car Company.
