  • Appalachian Old Time Music

Just curious. Does anyone like the old time Appalachian music? It was the precursor to country and bluegrass. The kind of music that was in the movie Ole Brother Where Art Though. I don't know if anyone watched the PBS special last Fall called Country music. Wow it was good. It showed the history of how this kind of music morphed into country music. What is your opinion on starting such a new thread? Or should we keep that music in the Country Music thread? What do you all think? Kind of interesting because I have always loved that music and then as I studied my genealogy I found out why. My roots are in that part of the country. Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. And it's heritage are the Scottish and Irish. Here is an example of what I am talking about. Hope some of you music lovers will give me your opinion on a new thread or keeping it in country music thread. I really don't consider it country music.

The Primitive Quartet began in 1973, when two sets of brothers, Reagan and Larry Riddle and Furman and Norman Wilson, carried a guitar and mandolin with them on a fishing trip to Fontana Lake. The Riddles had grown up on farms in Madison and Buncombe Counties, and the Wilson brothers, originally from Franklin, learned to sing shape notes from their father, who was a minister for fifty-seven years. The boys all sang at home and in church, but that night in Graham County was when they first sang in four-part harmony. After the fishing trip, with the encouragement of their parents and pastor, they began to sing together at area churches, calling themselves the Riddle-Wilson Quartet.

My parents and sister and other relatives go to this alot of years. Not far from my hometown.
            It's probably similar.

Ran across this on the internet. Interesting adaptation of an Elton John song.
