  • Peaceful Protest

With everything going on all over this country in major metropolitan areas with all the violence, rioting, and looting,I am more then proud with the fact that two of Jersey's major cities,Newark and Camden, with reputations of violence and civil unrest in the past,''together'' with law enforcement, the citizens of these cities conducted 'Peaceful Protests' in the aftermath of the death of George Floyd...

Growing up in Newark,I was a teenager in 67 during the unforgettable Newark riots,I remember it like yesterday with scars to match, both physically and emotionally...'Nuff said'...

My daughter and a group of her friends were down at the protest, because that's how strongly they felt about the death of George Floyd...Was I apprehensive about her involvement in that protest?...Absolutely!!!!...But wouldn't that make me a hypocrite to everything that I believe in if I spoke out against her going to that protest...I'm damn proud of her and everyone involved in that 'Peaceful Protest'...

Also, kudos to Chris Swanson and all the law enforcement officers in Flint,Michigan for their 'Peaceful Protest' 'Marching' right beside the citizens of that city!!!!

Philadelphia is in the news. Crowds, cops and now tear gas.
Mostly the younger crowd from what I see.
Somewhere around the art museum area.

Read and listen to Terrance Floyd,George's brother,'Echoing' the wisdom of Martin Luther King Jr....

''The limitation of riots, moral questions aside,is that they cannot win and their participants know it...Hence,rioting is not revolutionary but reactionary because it invites defeat...It involves an emotional catharsis, but it must be followed by a sense of futility''-MLK JR.

''Nonviolence is the answer to the crucial political and moral questions of our time...The need for man to overcome oppression and violence without resorting to oppression and violence...Man must evolve for all human conflict a method which rejects revenge, aggression and retaliation...The foundation of such a method is love''-MLK JR.

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin did more in ''10 minutes'' then civil rights activists could do in previous decades...Agree or Disagree, here are 2 examples, with more to come I'm sure...

Both are and will continue to be controversial. Phila loves Frank. ( well some phila folks ! ) The south loves their Confederate hero's.
The only way I can understand these issues is to point out that with time, the true history reveals the person and their cause. Many of which we won't or can't condone in a modern society.

I'll refer to this article to explain what I am thinking.
Lessons From Germany’s Confrontations With the Past
Should statues, monuments, and symbols that offend people be removed from public spaces? And what should happen to them if they are?
The United States is not alone in dealing with public reminders of its conflicts.
Taking down statues and monuments is a relatively easy task. The more difficult challenge is to grapple, openly and honestly, with the past.

It's not just a southern thing...Rizzo was Italian...I recall last year Chaz Palminteri and the Italian community, including all of my Italian friends, and my wife, were so up in arms about the disrespect attributed to Christopher Columbus and Mother Cabrini...

                https://nypost.com/2019/10/06/chazz-...i-statue-snub/

And let's not forget, there was a time in this country's history when the Irish,Italians,Greeks,Jews, and Poles were not considered ''White'' until it became a matter of upping the white numbers and gaining allies against the 'actual' non-whites...

                  Re: Peaceful Protest

I watched the first 20 minutes.
And it's pretty good so far but will watch the rest.
Good history stuff. I'm not from Philly but know a little living about an hour or so north.
One thing we knew was NEVER mess with a Philly cop. And Rizzo brought that. Very tough character. Reputation of making the city safe. So far clip shows that the mob respected him and the mob murders and such didn't kick in until the 80's.
I'm no fan of authoritarianism in many ways except for the Church. But I see the need for order and these rioters and looters are gonna make things unsafe.
