Default Chicago Leader Shakes Up Teamster Race

I sure would like to see the whole Hoffa administration voted out.

Juan Campos, the leader of Chicago Local 705, announced today that he is running for International Union Vice President At-Large with Sean O’Brien and Fred Zuckerman.

Today’s announcement shakes up the race for International Union leadership. Campos heads the powerhouse Local 705, a Chicago-based local with more than 17,000 members.

“We are three of the most active Locals in the Teamsters Union,” Campos said of Local 705, Boston Local 25, and Louisville Local 89.

“We work hard to engage the members and put Union power back where it belongs: with the rank-and-file. We are not running simply to run. We are running to win and we are running to make big changes in the Teamsters Union, Campos said.

"Sean and I are committed to making this union the most powerful union in the country and I am very proud, and very honored, to stand here with somebody that shares the same vision as we do to lead this vision forward," Fred Zuckerman said.

Chicago IBT 705 leader Juan Campos boosts fight to take Teamsters in new direction

Chicago, IL - Teamsters from all over Chicago descended upon Teamster City, January 31, to celebrate the announcement that Juan Campos, secretary treasurer of Teamster 705, will be running for vice president at-large for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters in 2021 on the O’Brien-Zuckerman Teamsters United slate.

“We’re building a coalition for a new direction,” stated Campos. “A stronger Teamsters union and a stronger labor movement.”

Teamsters United was born out of a struggle against weak union leadership and concessions from employers such as UPS, ABF and UPS Freight. After a historic rejection of the national master UPS agreement in 2014, Fred Zuckerman, president of Teamsters 89 in Louisville, gained national fame as his local voted in record numbers to continue to reject Hoffa’s concessions.

This article is not from the TDU site but it is about the opposition. I think this is going to be the official opposition thread and I will post all news about this topic here. Another article about the same thing but it is good to get different perspectives.

A Bad Day for Hoffa: Chicago Teamster Leader Joins Opposition Slate

Campos’s Local 705 publicly mulled a strike last fall. The union’s 17,000 members include 8,500 Chicago-area Teamsters who have their own contract with UPS—that is, they’re not included in the national deal.

On major issues, Chicago’s contract tends to follow the national pattern. But after the union pushed through such a weak agreement, the local bargaining team declared it was determined to do better.

A strike just after Thanksgiving—the beginning of the frenzied peak season of holiday package delivery—would have been big leverage against UPS. It would also have taken a serious commitment from members, who count on the money they make in long hours of peak-season overtime.

Unfortunately, bargaining team members said the message they got from intermediaries speaking for Teamsters headquarters was clear: We set the bar. You can’t get more than we got.

“My phone kept ringing every time there was a proposal that differed” from the national deal, said Campos.

“We were both negotiating against the company and our own international union at the same time,” said Dave Bernt, a UPS feeder driver and bargaining committee member.

    Matt Taibi Joins O'Brien-Zuckerman Slate

This announcement comes on the heels of Juan Campos’s announcement that he, too, will run with O’Brien-Zuckerman.
Taibi ran with Fred Zuckerman Teamsters United in 2016, opposing Hoffa and O’Brien. But this time, Taibi and O’Brien are putting aside their differences.

“This is the best team to unify our union,” says Taibi. “We were able to see our visions weren’t very different. We’ve unified our membership.”

First elected to lead Local 251 on a reform slate in 2013, the leadership under Taibi’s watch has turned their local around. They have instituted fiscal reform to put members’ dues to work, started a strike fund and are taking on employers to organize new members and win good contracts.
