Default Hoffa: We Stand With Flint

This situation is bad, really bad.
(WASHINGTON) – The following is the official statement of Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa on the Flint, Mich. water crisis.

“Over the past month the water crisis in Flint, Mich. has been brought to the nation’s attention. However, this is a tragedy that Michiganders have been aware of and the families of Flint have been dealing with since April 2014. Decisions made by state officials over the last year-and-a-half have led to a community being forced to use water from the Flint River – a source that has been found to contain unacceptable levels of lead.

“Despite a community uniting together to demand a clean and safe water supply, government officials ignored and dismissed the concerns. However, it took less than six months for General Motors in Flint to be granted a change of water source after complaining that the river water was rusting its parts. What does that say about our government when car parts are put ahead of public safety?

Hoffa: Infrastructure and Citizen Concerns Ignored

Flint residents are in crisis, placed in a situation no one in this country should have to face. Their water is contaminated with lead, putting their health at risk. And Gov. Rick Snyder is shirking his responsibilities to find a long-term solution.

Last week, Snyder announced that replacing water pipes were not in the city’s short-term plans, calling it “a lot of work” to be done. Meanwhile, some 100,000 city residents — many of them low-income — are left to make do with temporary fixes that inadequately address the problem.

Teamsters from all over the Midwest have pitched in to help the people of Flint. Members from Grand Rapids to Indianapolis have trucked in more than 200,000 bottles of water as of last week. And those efforts will continue. But make no mistake, bottled water or even water filters are not a permanent solution to the problem.

The evil UAW, and the General Motors step up to help the residents of Flint !

General Motors and the United Auto Workers union plan to donate $3 million to support increased health and education services for Flint children who have been exposed to lead, officials announced Tuesday.

The five-year commitment from the Detroit-based automaker and the union will address "immediate, ongoing and growing needs of Flint children affected by lead" due to the city's water crisis, the United Way of Genesee County said.

All I can ask is ... why ?

Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz is holding up bipartisan legislation to address the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, where lead-contaminated pipes have resulted in an ongoing public health emergency.
Senators reached a tentative deal Wednesday for a $220 million package to fix and replace the city's lead-contaminated pipes, make other infrastructure improvements and bolster lead-prevention programs nationwide.
Cruz, of Texas, and at least one other GOP senator objected to a quick vote on the deal, delaying Senate consideration of the bill until at least next week.
Michael Brune, executive director of the Sierra Club, the nation's largest environmental organization, said "Ted Cruz only cares about one thing — and that's Ted Cruz. It's clear that he'll do anything to promote his own political aspirations without any regard for what's right for Flint and communities like Flint across the country."

It must have been time to ... back pedal

Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz on Thursday lifted a hold he placed on bipartisan legislation to address the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, where lead-contaminated pipes have resulted in an ongoing public health emergency.
A spokesman for the Texas senator, Phil Novack, said Thursday night that Cruz had reviewed the bill and will not prevent it from moving forward in the Senate.

There was no word on whether other holds on the legislation had been removed.
Novack declined to specify the nature of Cruz's concern, but many Republican senators have said it's too early to provide funds for Flint without specific plans from state and local officials.
