Unionized employees with the Town of Leamington have overwhelmingly ratified new collective agreements after withdrawing virtually all of their proposals in the wake of last month’s announcement that the town’s Heinz plant would close next summer.

Members of Teamsters Local 879 and the area’s firefighter’s association both pulled proposals off the table this week and signed two-year deals with no pay increases.

“The settlements wouldn’t have bankrupted the town but it was a very much appreciated gesture in light of what we’re facing here right now,” said Mayor John Paterson.”It was largely initiated by the two unionized groups and to us, it’s a feel-good situation and we’re happy they stepped up to the plate.”
