Default Union Continues Fight for CVS Pharmacists’ Breaks

Teamsters Local 727 representatives continue to fight to ensure CVS pharmacist members are no longer denied their breaks and meal periods.

Earlier this year, the union filed a grievance on behalf of all members for the company’s denial of uninterrupted breaks and meal periods. CVS management refused to work with the union to resolve the grievance, so Local 727’s legal department is taking the case to arbitration.

“This is a violation of our members’ contractual rights, but more importantly, the denial of breaks is unreasonable, disrespectful and shows blatant disregard for the well-being of dedicated employees,” said John Coli Jr., President of Local 727. “The union is committed to fighting this tooth-and-nail.”

Corporate America is out to crush even the old white collar workers.
No job, or profession, is safe from the relentless onslaught from the corporate thieves.

I totally agree. We have to ask ourselves why? What is their ultimate goal? Scary thought. I am not a conspiracy type person but I truly do fear what the republicans are up to.

Oh, but they are. They want to protect us alright. Protect us from our rights to Unionization. Protect us from a liveable wage. Protect us from top tier health insurance. Protect us from a defined pension to retire on. Need I say more?

Teamsters: CVS Is Unfair to Labor, Unfair to Pharmacists
CHICAGO — CVS pharmacists and Teamsters Local 727 representatives took action Tuesday, May 10, by passing out handbills outside Chicago-area pharmacies to inform the public of safety risks associated with CVS management’s mistreatment of overworked and understaffed pharmacists.

“Pharmacists are professionals whose top priorities are patient care and public safety,” said John Coli Jr., President of Local 727. “The public needs to know that when pharmacists are constantly given more work with less help and little down time during their long and demanding shifts, this affects their performance and well-being — and it also can impact customer safety. Simply put, we are calling on management to let pharmacists return their full focus to taking care of their customers.”

The three-year contract covering about 150 Chicago-area CVS pharmacists expired Saturday, May 7. Teamsters Local 727 and CVS management do not have an extension agreement in place, so pharmacists are currently working without a contract. After seven negotiation meetings with the Teamsters Local 727 Bargaining Committee, CVS management is still refusing to listen to pharmacists’ concerns about their diminishing working conditions. Local 727 also filed unfair labor practice charges against CVS (NYSE:CVS) with the National Labor Relations Board last week.

With CVS Negotiations Set to Resume July 20, Local 727 Participates in Informational Picket

Teamsters Local 727 continued its efforts to inform the public of the safety risks associated with CVS management’s mistreatment of overworked and understaffed pharmacists as union representatives participated in an informational picket outside Chicago-area pharmacies on July 15.

The Teamsters Local 727 Bargaining Committee and CVS management are scheduled to resume negotiations July 20 and July 21.

“The public needs to know what their CVS pharmacists are up against and how it can impact customer safety,” said John Coli Jr., President of Local 727. “Pharmacists are constantly given more work with less help and little down time during their long and demanding shifts. And as we have for months, we are once again calling on CVS management to let pharmacists return their full focus to taking care of their customers.”
