    Default School bus drivers strike

Of course, blame the Teamsters and the union in general for this strike.

School Bus Strike Thursday, Bus Co. Blames Teamsters, Witman Blasts Elorza
It is official, thousands of Providence public school children will be without bus transportation on Thursday.
Last minute efforts by Mayor Jorge Elorza proved ineffective and Teamsters Local 251 is going on strike. Now, Elorza is being criticized by his opponent Diane "Dee Dee" Witman for his failure to deliver basic city services.
The bus company is blaming the union.
This action involves the pension fund and the company does not want to use the New England Teamsters & Trucking Industry Pension Fund.

"This is a desperate attempt to force our drivers to join the New England Teamsters & Trucking Industry Pension Fund. The plan is currently underfunded by $3.6 billion, has liabilities that have increased by $700 million in just the last two years, is classified as being in “critical and declining” status by the U.S. Treasury Department, and may be insolvent in less than 10 years," added McMahon.

"First Student has been negotiating with Teamsters Local 251 representatives since June. As we have told union leadership, we will discuss improvements to our last, best and final offer – including wage, 401(k) and benefits improvements. We will not, however, jeopardize the retirement security of our employees by forcing them to join a severely underfunded Teamsters pension. First Student stands ready and willing to return to the negating table - anytime, anywhere - to avoid further disruption to student bus service."

Update on school bus driver strike in Providence.

No meetings scheduled between bus drivers, First Student as strike continues
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- Students who ride the bus in Providence were without transportation to and from school again on Monday as the city's bus drivers picketed for the third day.
As of Monday afternoon, no new meetings have been scheduled between Teamsters Local 251, the union representing the bus drivers, and First Student, Inc., the private company that oversees the city's school bus operations.
Union members have been without a contract since June as the two sides continue to squabble over retirement benefits. The union is demanding that drivers receive pension plans while the company maintains it is only willing to increase its contribution to the members’ 401(k) plans.
Student attendance dropped to 84% on the first day of the strike, according to the school district, and even further, to 79%, on day two. The district said students who were absent or late due to transportation issues during the first three days of the strike would be excused. With the strike set to enter its fourth day on Tuesday, parents are urging for a resolution more than ever.

Another story about these striking bus drivers, the company First Student, and the other labor issues the company has, and had, around the country.

In Seattle, Teamsters and First Student’s School Bus Strike Battled for More Than a Week
Earlier this year across the country, nearly the same bus strike scenario played out in Seattle as the city was hit with a nine-day strike of school bus drivers.
The school bus strike in Providence is now entering a full week and its impact is being felt across all corners of the city. It is big business, in the past three years, First Student has been paid by the City of Providence in excess of $30 million.
The battle on the West Coast was a similar battle between the Teamster and First Students in Seattle. Ultimately, the two sides were forced to settle when the Mayor of Seattle threatened action against the bus company.

This is very interesting. Suggesting to have National Guard troops drive the school buses while the Teamsters walk the picket line.
Sorry, first thing that comes to my mind is Ohio State.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The head of the nonprofit Rhode Island Association of School Committees has suggested a novel approach to the lingering school bus strike in Providence: bring in the National Guard.
With both sides in the strike seemingly locked into their positions, Tim Duffy, executive director of the school committee association, said National Guard soldiers are trained to drive large trucks, have been vetted for criminal history and have experience dealing with civilians.
Duffy’s suggestion is that members of the Guard drive the First Student buses until the labor dispute is resolved.
A spokesman for the National Guard, Jeff Lessard, said the governor’s office has briefed him on the school bus strike, now in its seventh day, but they did not discuss any potential role for the Guard.
Some 9,000 Providence public school students have been affected by the strike, which stems from a disagreement over retirement benefits for the drivers, members of Teamsters Local 251.

    No deal after yesterday's negotiations.

No deal reached in Providence bus driver strike
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) -- Parents aren't going to like this, no deal as day 8 of the Providence bus drivers' strike finishes up. The union and bus company went back to the bargaining table today but still haven't come to a contract agreement.
The union and First Student wrapped up talks after about 3 and a half hours today. Both say they were constructive but still no deal has been reached. Now it might depend on the city taking action.
No one will say if there's an end in sight for the Providence bus drivers strike. Talks with a federal mediator went well but bus drivers will hit the picket line again on Wednesday.
