The Stop & Shop Strike Is Showing There’s Still Power in a Union

The current state of Stop & Shop should be a legitimate concern for the company. The Southern California grocery strike of 2003 to 2004 led to the establishment of new grocery chains and customers shifting their allegiances after they began shopping at different stores. The same trend could very well impact New England. Customer Gail Zulla told a local news station that she used to shop at a Providence location of Stop & Shop but had been picking up her groceries at the local rival Shaw’s. "It's the busiest I've ever seen a Shaw's in my life,” she said, “It's like it's a snow storm. There's no bread, there's nothing." She said she’ll take her business elsewhere while the strike is underway, adding, "maybe I'll stay at Shaw's.”

When In These Times spoke with UFCW Local 1445 political director Jim Carvalho last month, he said that the union was hoping other workers would be inspired by the actions of the Stop & Shop employees. This appears to have born out. The striking workers have received solidarity from faith groups, other unions and local lawmakers. Rabbi Jon-Jay Tilsen of Beth El-Keser Israel in New Haven told The New Haven Register, “Any food purchased by crossing a picket line or from scab workers is not kosher for Passover.” The Teamsters Council 10 has stopped picking up trash for the company, and Massachusetts Democratic Senator (and presidential candidate) Elizabeth Warren showed up at a picket line with coffee and donuts for the employees. "These giant companies think they can knock unions back," Warren told the Somerville crowd on April 12. "Unions are here to stay because when you're fighting for your family, you stay in the fight until you win."

One thing you can never deny, and that it's the Democrats that at least stand with unionized workers. We may not get what we want, but at least we hear the right words from them.

'This Is Morally Wrong': Biden Supports Striking Massachusetts Grocery Workers
Former Vice President Joe Biden told a rally in Dorchester, Mass., Thursday that the 31,000 Stop & Shop workers on strike in New England are part of a movement to "take back this country."
"I know you're used to hearing political speeches, and I'm a politician. I get it," said Biden, who is mulling over a White House bid in 2020. "But this is way beyond that, guys. This is way beyond that. This is wrong. This is morally wrong, what's going on around this country. And I have had enough of it. I'm sick of it, and so are you."
Biden, a Democrat, was quick to support members of the United Food & Commercial Workers union when they walked off the job last week.
Thursday's appearance in Boston gave Biden face time with a key Democratic constituency — blue-state union members — on the home turf of potential primary rival Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who already has entered the presidential race. Warren joined picketing Stop & Shop workers in Somerville, Mass., last Friday, saying, "Unions built America's middle class, and unions will rebuild America's middle class."

He might have made a good match with Obama but I don't like the game he is playing. I have not watched the news for a few days but last I heard he still had not announced a run for the presidency. IMO this is all a ploy to throw Bernie out of the ring again. I do agree with you that he is another corporate democrat. I am done with those types!

Police: Man threatened to shoot CT Stop & Shop strikers with AK-47

People are just absolutely nuts anymore!

On the eve of the ninth day of the Stop & Shop workers strike, a man called a Wethersfield Stop & Shop and threatened to “shoot them (strikers) with an AK-47” when he learned they were still on strike, according to police.

The Stop & Shop on the Berlin Turnpike in Wethersfield was evacuated Thursday after the store received the threat.

Wethersfield police said the man made the call around 6 p.m. Police got a call from the store manager of the store to report the suspicious call.

“An unidentified male subject called the store and asked if the employees were still picketing in front of the store,” police said. “After the manager stated that the employees were still in front of the store, the male stated he was coming to the store to shoot them with an AK-47.”

Tentative deal reached to end Stop & Shop strike, both sides say

Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. and unions for workers at more than 240 New England stores said Sunday night that they've reached a tentative agreement to end an 11-day work stoppage by more than 30,000 employees in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.

Stop & Shop said it was "glad to have our associates return to work as the strike has ended." The three-year agreement, however, is still subject to ratification votes by five locals of the United Food and Commercial Workers union, or UFCW.
    Good. Hope it works out.
