    01/28/2010 - 4:16pm

The UFCW International Union has issued a press release on behalf of the five New England Locals addressing the issue of Stop & Shop placing advertisements to hire temporary replacement workers

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 27, 2010

MEDIA CONTACT: Ed Lynch, UFCW Region 1, NE

LOYAL WORKERS AND CUSTOMERS BETRAYED BY STOP & SHOP

New England grocery threatens workers and communities with misguided advertisements for replacement grocery workers.

(New England) -- Thousands of grocery workers throughout Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut — members of United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local Unions 1445, 328, 371, 1459, and 919 — are bargaining with their employer, Stop & Shop, for a fair contract. But Stop & Shop is taking an adversarial and confrontational position by placing advertisements in local papers, announcing the company is hiring temporary replacement workers.

Stop & Shop is now the largest food retailer based in New England. It operates more than 360 stores throughout four of the six New England states, as well as in New York and New Jersey.

The chain was acquired by the American branch of Dutch food giant Ahold in 1995. In 2004, Ahold integrated Stop & Shop Supermarkets with Giant Food LLC and created one combined company with the name of Stop & Shop/Giant-Landover.

On February 17, 2007, the contract with Stop & Shop employees expired after three years. In an attempt to maintain their current health care benefits, union workers threatened to strike. It was understood that no strike would occur until at least Thursday, February 22, 2007.

The contentious stop-and-go negotiations between Stop & Shop and its five unions came to a surprising yet happy conclusion with a three-year contract overwhelmingly ratified by union members across New England, and a strike was averted.

    I have a buddy that is a butcher at a S & S in R.I .
He says that healthcare, and other bennies are the big concerns in these negotiations .
These big corporations always hire temps, hoping that they can get workers nervous . They hope that the bad economy will sway the members vote on the contract .

Stay strong brothers & sisters !

    Default Store hires temporary workers

    Store hires temporary workers

    By Tony Dobrowolski

PITTSFIELD -- Stop & Shop has begun hiring temporary workers in Berkshire County as contract negotiations with the union that represents the chain's cashiers and clerks approach a Saturday deadline.

The Quincy-based chain, which is negotiating a three-year contract with five New England locals of the United Food and Commercial Workers union, began hiring temporary clerks and cashiers at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Thursday. The hiring session ended Saturday.

According to a classified advertisement that was published in The Berkshire Eagle, "the temporary employment would occur in the event there is a strike or lockout because of a labor dispute."

Stop & Shop is offering full-time positions for $15 an hour, and part-time positions for $12 per hour, which is more than the starting salaries that union employees currently make, according to Scott L. Macey, the president of UFCW Local 1459, which represents some 2,000 employees at 17 Stop & Shop supermarkets in the four counties of Western Massachusetts.

Stop & Shop operates two supermarkets in Pittsfield and one in North Adams that contain about 350 union members, Macey said.

Company spokeswoman Faith Weiner declined to say how many temporary workers the company plans to hire in Pittsfield, but said the hiring session was scheduled as part of a "contingency plan" in case a work stoppage does occur.

Stop & Shop union workers approve new contract

    By Peter Schworm

Grocery workers this morning approved a new contract with Stop & Shop Supermarket Co., ending months of tense negotiations and averting a threatened strike.

A day after reaching a tentative agreement with the supermarket chain, some 2,000 union members agreed to a three-year deal that will boost wages and preserve benefits, said a spokesman for the area branch of the United Food and Commercial Workers.
