Default Struggling Teamster Wants Wife Back

Struggling husband wants his wife back

There's more after this which was copied:
    May 31, 2010

CLEARWATER - On a quiet suburban street, not far from the Countryside Country Club, sits one house not as well-kept as the others. The garage door needs paint. The lawn is dead. The water in the backyard pool is black.

Inside, in a wheelchair, sits Hugo Villota, a 70-year-old retired truck driver, his fingers twisted by a losing battle with arthritis, his knees shot after years of working the clutch.

He used to share the home with his wife, Luz America Villota, a 69-year-old retired bilingual secretary. But now she lives in The Oaks of Clearwater, a high-rise nursing home, and gets around on a walker.

A general magistrate decided Luz could no longer care for herself because she suffers from dementia, and that Hugo couldn't care for her properly, either.

Now, Hugo wants his wife back. He misses her, and he wants to take care of her.

And if she doesn't come back home, he'll lose the house.

After years of working - he for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, she for the New York City Department of Health - the Villotas decided to retire in Pinellas County. They purchased a home at 2742 Burning Tree Lane in 2003 for $270,000.

By 2006, the market value of the home had skyrocketed to $348,200, and Hugo used some of the equity to pay $230,000 for an investment property on Chaucer Court in Palm Harbor.

In a matter of months, the Villotas were in over their heads financially. The couple began moving back and forth between the two homes, trying to rent out the other.

The only thing between them and losing both houses was his monthly retirement income of about $2,000 and hers of $2,100. Now she's in a nursing home, and her money doesn't even cover that bill. Foreclosure proceedings have already begun on the Palm Harbor property and Hugo says he still won't be able to pay the mortgage on the Burning Tree Lane property

Hugo bristles at the suggestion he volunteer to live in an apartment with his wife at The Oaks.

"Why should I be there?" Hugo said at a recent court hearing. "I enjoy my house and my freedom.

I'm not trying to be the bad guy here but it sounds to me as if he isn't thinking clearly. If he can't take care of himself or pay the 2 mortgages and he wants to be with his wife. Then maybe he should just listen to his daughter and move in with his wife. That way they will both be cared for.

You're probably right. if they need care. they need care...It's a shame they have to lose their house over it.

The article says he his knees were 'shot' from years of working the clutch. I guess the author suffers from the common misconception that being a member and working for the Teamsters is the same thing.

I agree, his decision to buy a car that he cant even drive should have been the final proof of that.
