Angry Harley Davidson concessions...

MILWAUKEE – Harley-Davidson employees in Wisconsin are being asked to vote in favor of a labor contract that will freeze their pay, slash hundreds of jobs and hand large volumes of work to nonunion workers.

As bleak as the proposal sounds, employees may have little choice but to accept it. ....

I am surprised that Bill and Sue Davidson would even consider such a move. They were featured this past year on a Visit Wisconsin travel advertisement. I would think that they would rethink this step. It would be a slap in the face to both their people and the State of Wisconsin.

Now saying all that, maybe it is time for us as union workers to revisit our method of pay & benefits. This is not a cut in pay per se, but if the union could be given some form of guarantee that money & benefits given up would be returned to the workers in future years, they might be willing to adjust.

Like in baseball and other sports, those big name players don't get all the money upfront but much or most of it is strung out over several years. Maybe we need to do the same?
My concerns on this however is that upper management does not get bonuses when the workers give up wages and that there is no way a future management team can cry foul when it comes time to pay the piper.

30.50 per hour is a nice salary but if cutting that to 25.00 per hour AND banking the other 5.00 into some form of profit sharing that employees can see would keep those jobs, then that's what they should do.

Remember when you make 75K a year, you spend 75K a year!
Most people don't do it on purpose, it's just how we live our lives.
Then also, 75K a year also figures out to around 52K a year after taxes & other charge backs by governmental bodies.

Herein lies one of the great American problems. For the most part no one saves for a rainy day. If you got it spend it, if you ain't got it that's what plastic is for! And pay interest out the wazoo.

Glad I didn't do that or I'd be out on the street under a bridge when I got hurt and couldn't return to work. Think the insurance company or Social Security cares. Think again, both will try to hose you as quick as anybody.

Expect the company to pay you in the future, come on now, you really think that's gonna happen?

The company will make the deal, the workers will accept it, but guess what when it comes time to collect there is no money or very little left. If the company conveniently files bankruptcy then there is little chance of getting anything.

Take a look at our own Teamster Pension Funds. Underfunded, yeah the law allows it but the working stiff is the one who gets hosed in the end. Work all your life, expect to get a certain amount each month on retirement, but there is no guarantee. If and when a fund gets turned over to the PBGC (the Feds) you only get pennies on the dollar.

Had a Union official tell me a few years ago that the problem with the pension funds was that some Teamsters were retiring at 52 years of age. When the contracts were written and the funds structured, this should have been planned for, not used as an excuse to make changes to the accural rate.

Even some Teamster officals find it easier to blame the member than to go out and organize new members.

Sounds like a bad situation was turned into a winless situation. Some kind of communication breakdown happened if the Union is wanting the workers to accept such a terribble contract and for that long. I hope only the best for this them.

They did something with their drivers in York a year or 2 ago also...which totally ruined a good job if I heard right.

Their trucks are now operated by UPS Freight Truckload--which as far as I know--is non-union. Now according to an official of my local 710, the Milwaukee based drivers are unionized but I haven't been able to prove same. If they are union, they must have a stand-alone contract separate from mine because there are no provisions in UPS Freight LTL contract for truckload work. Geez, I wonder why that is?

MILWAUKEE - Harley-Davidson Inc. agreed Tuesday to keep open its two Wisconsin production facilities, saying it gained the cost savings it needed when union members agreed a day earlier to a concession-laden contract. ...
Some Harley workers said the company caused its own troubles through foolish business decisions, and now it's trying to make its money back by squeezing workers with an unfair contract.
Imagine that.

This comes from your link X:
The seven-year contract freezes employees' pay, slashes hundreds of production jobs and assigns large volumes of work to part-time workers.

If things continue this way, I see ugly things in store for this country..7years!!!! Hundreds of job cuts! PT worker increases!!

This is getting sickening...I think if Harley 'recovers"....the bikes ain't gonna be safe...recalls galore on the horizon.
