Default Postal workers unions protest Staples program

I don't blame them. More union busting! All this when the USPS is hanging by a thread!
CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Postal workers in cities big and small protested in front of Staples stores on Thursday, objecting to the U.S. Postal Service's pilot program to open counters in stores, staffed with retail employees.

Rallies were planned at 50 locations in 27 states. In Concord, N.H., more than 100 boisterous workers donned bright blue shirts and lined a busy commercial road near a Staples store.

"Union busting, we say no," they chanted, "the Staples deal has got to go."

The labor movement hasn’t had the best 2014 so far, with a bruising defeat for the UAW in its attempts to organize auto workers in the South, and an ominous Supreme Court ruling for public sector unions. But today, the American Postal Workers Union and its allies seem to be making progress in an important battle.

The APWU has long opposed a trial program, which began in the fall of 2013, to offer postal services at Staples SPLS +1.38% stores. The program, the union said, would undermine the role of post offices and shift postal worker jobs to lower paid and less experienced Staples retail staff. In April, it called on other unions to join it in boycotting Staples in protest of the program.

Thank Unions For Stopping The Scheme To Replace The Post Office With Staples
The company and the Postal Service have been coy about whether the boycott forced their hand, though it’s hard not to see the latest development as a victory for the unions, who viewed the mini-post offices as a way to take jobs away from them and a step toward privatizing a public service.
The American Federation of Teachers is standing in solidarity with the postal workers union, a person close to the AFT's campaign to boycott Staples told HuffPost.
