Default ATI Steelworkers Receive Global Union Support

Another big strike involving another union.
(Pittsburgh, Pa) - Trade Union activists from across the United States, Canada and Sweden today energized locked out Steelworkers at seven ATI locations across Western Pennsylvania.

“ATI should end the lock out immediately and put our members back to work,” said USW member Alonzo Scott from Petersburg, Va. who was among the 50 activists who engaged in today’s action. “Being forced out is not beneficial to either side.”

ATI locked out 2,200 members on Aug 15 in 12 locations and six states. The Steelworkers were working under the terms of their old agreement, but ATI shut down bargaining and forced them out. ATI is attempting to run the mills with management personnel and temporary replacement workers brought in from outside the impacted communities.

“The fact that ATI has brought in replacement workers to do the Steelworkers’ jobs hoping that they would give in to the company’s demands is really frightening to me because that is something that is almost unheard of in Sweden in modern times,” said Emma Akesson who is a Swedish auto worker and serves on the national bargaining committee there.

In Pittsburgh, the firm Allegheny Technologies has been involved in a labor dispute with United Steelworkers that has let to 2,000 members being locked out over the course of this month.

As Sean Kitchen discovered, the company Storm Engineering, which finds scab workers to break strikes, has placed an ad on Craigslist looking for workers to work 84-hour-week during the lockout:

Steelworkers scoff at ATI earnings claim
If one thing angers ATI's union steelworkers more than the current lockout, it's the company's claims about their earnings.

ATI Flat-Rolled Products, formerly known as Allegheny Ludlum Steel, has said on its company website, in news releases and paid advertisements that the average salary of ATI's union workers is $94,000.

While several steelworkers at the United Steelworkers Local 1196 hall said they earned that or close to that figure in the past year, they emphasized that it was not from their base 40-hour per week wages.

“It's not an average it's a lie,” said Bill Katora, 59, of Harrison. “They're (ATI) trying to mislead the public, and we need the public's support.”
