Default Teamsters join Anti-Amazon HQ2 effort, demand better treatment of NY workers

When Amazon announced it would build its second headquarters in Long Island City, activists immediately spoke out against the deal. Now, the New York City Teamsters union has joined an effort to oppose Amazon HQ2 in Queens.

Teamsters joined a coalition created by the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU) against HQ2 this week. Both unions sent joint letters to city and state officials announcing their partnership against Amazon HQ2 and requesting the tech giant change “the way it operates in New York.”

Amazon has historically been anti-union, though it’s workers, especially those at Amazon warehouses, have repeatedly attempted to organize. Labor issues plague the company, with employees voicing concerns about safety, inadequate pay, unreasonable forced overtime and more. Multiple workers have died at Amazon facilities.

“Jeff Bezos needs to come to the Staten Island fulfillment center to speak with his associates and to see how we are being treated first hand,” said Rashad Long, a worker there, in a statement. “We are not robots. We are human beings. We cannot come into work after only 4 hours of sleep and be expected to be fully energized and ready to work. ... I feel like all the company cares about is getting their products out to the customers as quickly as possible, no matter what that means for us workers in the end.”

My wife worked for Amazon and I made her quite because of the awful working conditions, this place routinely breaks the rules.
True to Amazons credit they provide Instant medical benefits, and other benefits.
The warehouse operates on a full speed ahead production line and God help you if you fail to keep up.

Workers Compensation would normally take care of this kind of abuse. The hiring, attendance policies, and operational job pressures all serve to prevent W/C claims.
The warehouses they are building today are highly automated and will in the near future will be fully automated and will only require human involvement in the very heavy merchandise, odd ball shapes and sizes. The pace is decided by who???
Profits and earnings soar, yet there is a human cost that is suppressed and concealed. The culture at Amazon is another problem, TOTAL control, no recording devices, no cell phones, no talking, one small break room in a million square foot warehouse and your break and lunch starts when the line stops running. NOT when you get in the break room. EVERYBODY goes to lunch and break at the same time.

No union, no deal, NYC labor leaders tell Cuomo and de Blasio about Amazon's new HQ

Two New York unions are teaming up to deliver a message to retail giant Amazon: labor is still king in Queens.

In a letter sent Monday to Gov. Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio, leaders from The Teamsters and the retail workers union asked that New York’s $3 billion deal with global corporation be put on hold in light of Amazon’s “anti-worker” history.

Not a penny of public funds should go to the trillion-dollar online titan until it commits to a fair process for Amazon workers in Queens to unionize, the labor leaders demanded. The letters went out just ahead of a planned City Council hearing Wednesday on the financing of the Amazon deal — the second of its four scheduled discussions on the controversial agreement.

“The growth of Amazon and its low-pay jobs is a direct threat to New York workers in the core industries of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters,” said the letter obtained by the Daily News.

Well, this is interesting for sure. I see both sides of the issue here. But this is what happens when corporate America is involved. Division!

Amazon Is Dividing (and Conquering?) New York City's Unions
Amazon’s plans to build its HQ2 in New York City in exchange for nearly $3 billion in public subsidies is dividing the city’s most powerful unions—and, by extension, the entire U.S. labor movement. Things are already getting very unfriendly.

Everyone in organized labor knows that unionizing Amazon, perhaps the most influential and powerful company in America, would be a coup. It would also have the potential to head off a full-scale transformation of retail and blue collar work that would leave workers desperate, underpaid, and with few options. It is important. And since New York City is the most pro-union place in the country, Amazon’s entry into town is widely seen as a chance to finally take down the Great White Whale of modern corporate America.

But cracks in labor’s united front emerged immediately after the deal was announced late last year. The building trade unions, along with 32BJ SEIU—one of the city’s strongest and most aggressive unions, which covers property service workers—announced their support for the HQ2 project. Amazon had agreed to use union construction workers, and to uphold an existing agreement that 32BJ had in place to use unionized security and building workers on its site, although, crucially, none of those workers would be direct employees of Amazon itself.

On the other side is the Retail Workers union [RWDSU], which has launched a campaign to unionize a new Amazon warehouse on Staten Island. Along with the Teamsters and a broad coalition of community and labor groups, the RWDSU has been loudly opposing the Amazon deal and its bestowal of huge public subsidies on a company with terrible record of opposing unions and treating workers poorly. This divide in the city’s unions came to a head this week when 32BJ held a pro-Amazon rally and the RWDSU and its allies held an anti-Amazon rally, all while an Amazon executive was telling the City Council that the company plans to oppose any union campaigns it encounters here.

Amazon: We’ll fight any attempt to unionize
The biggest online retailer in the world told one of the most union-dominated cities that its workers will not organize on their watch.

During a hearing at City Hall last week, New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson engaged in a heated back and forth with Amazon Vice President Brian Huseman. When Johnson confronted Huseman about the possibility of letting their workers organize, Huseman replied, “We would not.”

Johnson also noted that part of the Amazon deal involved agreements with SEIU 32BJ-represented building service workers. “You picked a couple of unions, so some workers are valued and other workers are not valued,” he asserted.

Members of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Workers Union and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters announced a partnership and requested meetings with Amazon.
"Wherever Amazon goes, the company has a track record of mistreating workers and violating their rights. New Yorkers deserve better,” added Teamsters Joint Council 16 President George Miranda. “As the company grows, it brings its poor labor practices into new industries and drives down standards for all.”

Facing opposition, Amazon reconsiders NY headquarters site, two officials say

Amazon.com is reconsidering its plan to bring 25,000 jobs to a new campus in New York City following a wave of opposition from local politicians, according to two people familiar with the company's thinking.

The company has not leased or purchased office space for the project, making it easy to withdraw its commitment. Unlike in Virginia — where elected leaders quickly passed an incentive package for a separate headquarters facility — final approval from New York state is not expected until 2020.
I like the "Unlike Virginia... " line. With the current problems the elected leaders have that could be changing real quick.

Teamsters JC 16 Statement on Amazon's Reconsideration of HQ2 in NY

(NEW YORK) –– The following is a statement from Teamsters Joint Council 16 President George Miranda on reports that Amazon is reevaluating its decision to locate its HQ2 in Long Island City.

“If a company the size of Amazon wants to come to New York City, it has to talk with the community, and that includes unions, community organizations and politicians. Their refusal to do so has put them in this situation.

“There are serious concerns over Amazon’s anti-worker behavior. Workers should be able to freely form a union without interference from their employer and Amazon won’t commit to that.

“We need companies in New York that are willing to engage with key stakeholders, respect workers and contribute to the success of our communities.

“If Amazon is unable to come to New York, it will only have itself to blame.”

    Amazon Shoots Its Hostages

The tech giant cancelled its deal with New York City as a warning to communities across the country.
Last Friday, less than 24 hours after detailing a bizarre plot by the National Enquirer to extort him with nude photos, Jeff Bezos took some hostages of its own. The newspaper he owns reported that Amazon, which had selected New York City as one of two “winners” of its HQ2 sweepstakes, was “reconsidering” its agreement with Governor Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio to bring 25,000 jobs in exchange for billions in tax breaks and incentives. The alleged reason: mounting opposition from state and local lawmakers and activists in Long Island City, the Queens community where the tech giant planned to build its campus.

On Valentine’s Day, rather than engage with his opponents, Bezos shot the hostages and canceled the deal. De Blasio, despite having courted Amazon, tried to spin this political blow to resonate with the growing backlash against Big Tech:

You have to be tough to make it in New York City. We gave Amazon the opportunity to be a good neighbor and do business in the greatest city in the world. Instead of working with the community, Amazon threw away that opportunity.
State Senator Michael Gianaris, one of the fiercest critics of the deal, compared Amazon to a spoiled brat. “Like a petulant child, Amazon insists on getting its way or takes its ball and leaves,” Gianaris said in a statement. “The only thing that happened here is that a community that was going to be profoundly affected by their presence started asking questions.”
