Default Grocery Workers Authorize Strike Against Oregon and SW Washington Stores

Grocery store workers in Oregon and Southwest Washington have voted to authorize a strike if the workers’ union fails to reach a satisfying agreement with negotiators representing such stores as Fred Meyer, QFC, Safeway and Albertsons.

Members of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 555 in Baker City voted on Saturday night to authorize a strike. That vote concluded a series of 92 meetings held this summer across Oregon and Southwest Washington, according to Kelley McAllister, the union’s communications director. Members of the union voted nearly unanimously, McAllister said, to authorize a strike if needed.

Northwest Grocery Worker Union Calls For Fred Meyer Boycott

A local union representing grocery workers from across Oregon and Southwest Washington has called for an immediate boycott of Fred Meyer stores and departments in the region. Union officials say the move comes after recent alleged harassment of unionized employees by higher-ups.

United Food and Commercial Workers Local 555 is locked in deteriorating contract negotiations with some of the region’s biggest supermarkets, including Fred Meyer, Albertsons and Safeway. After the most recent negotiations deadlocked, the union cancelled nearly all its contract extensions with the Fred Meyer and QFC locations in its jurisdiction, as well as a handful of Safeways and Albertsons.

Kelley McAllister, with UFCW Local 555, said the union was targeting solely Fred Meyer due to recent allegations that managers at the stores had called unionized employees into their offices and berated them.

“We got information from members in those meetings that they were being threatened and harassed and told that they were worthless, told that anyone off the street could do their job,” she said.

McAllister said the alleged abuse constituted unfair labor practice and was reported to the National Labor Relations Board.
I was talking to a clerk at Albertsons the other day "I'm getting very nervous. It is not looking good," was all she would say with tears in her eyes. I wanted to try to encourage her but there was several others behind me.

The union representing thousands of Fred Meyer workers has reached a tentative labor agreement with representatives for most major local grocery chains, the union announced Saturday.

United Food and Commercial Workers Local 555 said the agreement means the end of the Fred Meyer boycott.
Not much info, as per usual of this Daily Fish Wrapper, but it sounds good.

    Here is another article RRRB

Grocery workers' union, Fred Meyer and others reach tentative agreement

The tentative agreement covers about 18,000 grocery workers at Fred Meyer, QFC, Albertsons and Safeway in Oregon and Southwest Washington. About 600 of those employees work in the Kelso-Longview area.

The details of the agreement are embargoed until union members review and vote on the contract, according to the union news release. Union officials will send out dates, times and locations for the vote over the next few days, the release says.

“Our bargaining team is happy to report that we were successful in addressing all of our concerns,” the union said.
The union was particularly upset with Fred Meyer, which union officials accused of using intimidation in response to the union’s decision to cancel its contracts with the store.

UFCW 555 filed an unfair labor practice complaint with the National Labor Relations Board earlier this month. The status of the investigation was unavailable Saturday.
