its on the IBT site it tells you how to do it. oh and by the way they dont make it easy for any one to get a hold of these guys. You have to write the guy a letter and snail mail it. this is 2009 isn't it? i wonder why they would make it like that. could it be to deter you from actually dong this. they couldn't let us email the leadership that wold be to easy. just another way to keep the rank and file away from the leaders.

Most companies do have an "Open-door policy" but they also prefer to use the chain of command. Most problems can be solved by using the chain of command system. They want you to start with your steward, then go to your chief steward, then business agent, then local, then joint council, and then to IBT if no one else can help. Typically smaller problems can be handled at the local level there is no reason to involve IBT. In most instances your business agent, local, or joint council can handle bigger problems a lot easier than a single member can. If something can't be handled by your local, they would contact the higher up person to get some type of resolution to the problem. Most major problems a member is facing effects others, they can deal with any problem you may have. I am sure they have seen it all. Have faith in the way this UNION works.

If I were an IBT official I would come to sites like this one just to see what my TEAMSTERS were saying and I would answer all the questions as they came up. I would explain to the YRC TEAMSTERS why we acted on the give back issue the way we did. I went on my company site the other day and made a comment that a senior executive didn't like and he personally e mailed me at home with his response. He did not have to respond to my statement but for the benefit of the company he contacted me and explained the company stance. You see if my company leaders can follow a forum why can't the people I and other TEAMSTERS pay hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to explain why certain decisions are being made. They sit down and talk to the company people but when was the last time a IBT official came to one of your meeting and had a open forum. Tyson Johnson could walk past 99% of the dues paying TEAMSTERS and they would not have a clue who he was. But we provide him with a very good Pension and Salary. I bet many TEAMSTERS in the Central don't know that a man named Gordon Sweeton has been a welcomed addition compared to many of the other IBT officials sitting on committees. I don't know about the rest of you but when the company say follow the chain of command it means they want to try and snowball you. But I do believe you should try and settle as many issues as you can at the terminal level . The more people that know your business the more problems you will encounter. YOUR BROTHER ALWAYS.

The only official I have ever seen participate in a forum like this was Chuck Mack, on the "other site". He would have a Q & A every few weeks. Didn't last very long.

I know General President James P. Hoffa did have a Q&A page on the IBT site. There was a lot of bogus questions on there because I believe it was open to the public and not just members (which ruined it for others). I haven't seen it on the site for a few years. I believe it's good to have a Q&A session with the members especially if there is an explanation of a major decision. I believe they leave it to the member to get involved most members could care less or have no idea how to stay informed but others (like most of the people on this forum) prefer to stay informed.

I would like to see a hook up so Members could speak to IBT officials during the monthly meetings. So they could ask the tough questions. I think it would really help the moral of the TEAMSTERS.The upper officials are not readily available to the average member. We all need to be a big part in the decision making. I have seen people in the position of making life altering decisions that I know they had no business holding such a position. A sad fact is that the vast majority of TEAMSTERS never get into trouble and therefore don't really care about being involved in the Union. But for those who do get singled out by the companies it is not a pretty site as to how they are treated by both sides sometimes. And to be able to question the officials at the monthly meetings sometimes would go a long way for the Members. After all if I have nothing to hide what harm would it do to be apart of a q&a at a monthly meeting?
