Default What If You Could Call The Shots?

We see many, many posts here all about how the Teamsters, in the midst of a possible YRC collapse, aren't doing what some people expect of our organization in these very trying times. Some say they haven't saved jobs but what if they wouldn't have agreed to put it to a vote and the lack of the 10%, which nobody really wanted to do, would have brought down the company to the point where say, only 23 or 24 thousand were working now instead of approx. 32 thousand? What if YRC wasn't here at all? We hate the fact that Glen Moore gets some of our freight but what if the little savings from this helps us stay afloat? Though these things are in the past we are more recently faced with another major misfortune in the pension mess. I understand the stress and anguish everybody is having to deal with now. And realistically things don't look to get any better in the near future......so......my question is.........

What would you do if you had the chance to call the shots? Think very carefully before you answer and keep in mind the livelihoods of some 32,000 active and who knows how many laid off Brothers and Sisters are hanging in the balance.

I'm a city guy and the good people that they let go who knew how to run an operation was the first mistake. Instead what we have in some instances are people on layoff that shouldn't be on layoff due to the fact that management can not run their operation proficiently, correctly, efficiently to the point you maximize the workforce.

Keeping the operation current and your OR in tact is the key but people move the freight not the numbers. Happy customers will keep freight on the truck cause you take care of them and make service.

Just my thought for now Dude, but let me let the thought marinate for a day or two.

Here is a thought, ONE, only one president capped pay one million mind you this person covers all worldwide, regionals, logistics. One vice president capped at 750,000 just because he has to put up with everyone including the pres. Get rid of the other presidents and vice presidents have regional managers covering each one for worldwide, one for regional and one for logistics to control sales, service and human resources. Terminal managers would handle supervision as well as dispatch that way it covers those that go on vacation and the TM actually knows what is going on instead of watching and signing checks while everyone does his or her job. The drivers do not need 3 to 5 dock supervisors they know their jobs and how to get it done so eliminate supervisors on a per barn basis 1 super to 12 employees not needed. Now we have eliminated all of these high paying jobs we can bring back the 20000 employees (drivers) laid off and eliminate the forced 10 / 14 hour days and get back to 9 hour days with employees happy instead of burned out and customers would be happier because there will be know excuses for being late because they will have the man power to cover the freight. Just a thought

One of my pet peeves is company cars.............CUT EM
I can maintain and drive my own car when I made $20,000 a year; I can surely maintain and drive one at $200,000 a year. We all have a budget, live within it.

Get rid of all the mortgaged companies.
Sure you're gonna lose money, but it'd your own damn fault in the first place for extending yourself too far.
Get what you can for it and get out. It's obvious we (they) are starving for cash, so liquidate.................NOW

stldude44, thank you for this. although we don't agree on many things, i can see by your posts that you, for one, do care for your ppl, and your not out for yourself, again thank you sir.

now, what would i do if i had the responsibility?
i would have gone to the first meeting, listening to what the co had to say, or propose, then i would have asked them if they were out of their f'kn mind, got up and walked out. then i would have called every aspect of the media and told the American public that the TEAMSTERS are very willing to work with the co to do what ever it takes to turn this co around, but, that management is going to have to get real, they are going to have to make sacrifices just like they are asking the 32 thousand TEAMSTERS to do!!!!!!!!!! ya, just like the pres of the U.A.W. did? ya, you know, act like a UNION!!!!!!!

OK, so they blew the first go around(no pun intended, or did i?). now we have round 2. again, go in and listen to what they are proposing, stand up, tell them that theres no way that you would even consider talking to the membership about anything, with out some real concisions on the part of YRC management! then i would walk out, call a press conference, and tell the public......, management of YRC wants to propose a deferment of UNION pension payments, after asking for and getting a 10% concision on pay, and yet bill zollars, and his team of managers are still making million, have filed S.E.C. papers that would allow millions more in bonuses. this is unacceptable, and until the management of YRC is ready to come to the table with real equitable proposals, there isn't anything to talk about. i would also explain that my members are struggling to pay there bills while zollars is donating thousands of dollars to Charity's!

risky? ya, damn right it is! scary? hell yes! BUT, and this is the bottom line guys............, if management relay wants the co to survive, they will set back down with the UNION, with real concisions. and if they don't, then they aren't serious, and all of this is a mute point anyways, were doomed, and there won't be anything any of us will be able to do to save it anyway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

just so you guys know where I'm coming from, and that I'm not just some blow hard, and this is all false bravado. i came from OVERNITE, Kansas city. all of us gave up some, me- i got a divorce, lost my family, my farm, and I'm one of the lucky ones. i know of a lot of guys that lost more!!!!

AND WE DID THIS FOR L E S S THEN WHAT MY UNION BROTHERS ARE RUNNING OVER TOP OF EACH OTHER, TO GIVE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ok., lets say I wanted to create a super power and times were pretty good and I bought up all these individual companies, remember, they were all doing good also. So now I own quite a comglomerate of companies and I am a hero. But then things go bad and it all starts to fall apart for whatever reason. And I realize that "I" am protected by a 15 million dollar umbrella so that no matter what happens I will be ok.
Now that is quite a setup. I can do anything I want. And no one can touch me. That's a lot of power. I would like to think I would be worried about my people. And I would start cutting corners. Take away the company cars and pay the employees mileage to use their own cars as my wife's company does. I would hope that I would cut out the corporate jets and have my employees use commercial airlines. But then wait, that would mean they would have to make reservations like the general public and check for the lowest fares and then show up an hour early and go through those TSA security lines where they take your cigarette lighters, but allow 3 books of matches and they make you take off your shoes and make women walk barefoot across a floor that a few hundred guys with sweaty feet have just walked across, and they haven't even cut their toe nails for a long time. And then they make you take out your computer that you need to take with you and they want you to turn it on for whatever reason and now you are holding up the line.
But wait, if we keep the corporate jets, all we have to do is show up, file a flight plan and board, just as if we were getting into our car, and fly away. So yes, that is quite an expense, but it's quite an expense the other way too? And wouldn't upper management be entitled to some perks?
It's real easy to say there is a lot of waste, but I wonder how much of that is jealousy? Don't get me wrong, there is A LOT of abuse and it really p*sses me off. I remember thinking how our company safety guys were driving oldsmobiles at the time. I thought, why couldn't they be driving hyundai elantra's? But I guess you do that with some small scab company and we're above that. Because if we thought like that, they would cheapen out our tractors even more than they already do?
So it kind of depends on what side of the fence you are on? We would have them stand in line at the airport as we have to do, but is that reality? How many of us would do that if we were on the other side of the fence? I mean, I'd strip them of every perk they have, but in reality, that's not going to happen. And if we had the chance to be on "that" side, I think many of us would probably do just what they are doing? I'm not even sure I answered the question here, but those are my thoughts.
