    W2 Woes for YRC Employees

    By JD Nutt

If you are a YRC Teamster employee or a member of YRC management, you need to take a good look at your W2 that you recently received. You might find it to be a bit confusing.

The equity wage and equity benefit totals which you thought to be a running total of your reduced wages, on a pay check by pay check basis, may actually have been reported as income to you by your employer, YRC Inc.

You'll need three documents to try and understand the confusion. First, you'll need your W2, and then you'll need two pay statements. One from the 22nd of January, 2009 and one from the 31st of December 2009.

With a calculator in front of you, add the year to date (YTD) total of the two pay stubs together. Then add the equity wages and equity benefits YTD totals from your 31st of December 2009 pay statement to the total of your YTD totals. This should add up to the amount reflected on your W2, in box 1 for wages, tips, other compensation.

Confused? Startled? Don't be. Perhaps you might want to try to telephone TheWorkNumber at 1-800-367-2884. They have a division called "W-2 eXpress". This is the company that is handling any issues you may have with your W2. I tried and received no satisfaction.

A good tax professional can correct the issue. However, if you do not itemize on your tax return, then you might just be screwed. It appears no withholdings were made on the equity wages.

I was under the impression that the 15% went into a share investment fund, and that would make it a pre-tax investment.
Is this article saying that should have been withholding taken out on the 15%?
It can't be pre-tax, and subject to withholding....................
    Can it.....................................

I think you better check your accounting methods, we where at 10% the first part of the year. then went into 15% later part of 2009. One needs to take this 5% difference into account, when tallying up your totals. Look at all your pay stubs, make note when we changed percentages.( 10% to !5%). Otherwise you be asking for an IRS audit.
But thank you for the heads up. It at least made me take a closer look at my W-2.
At present I am digging out all my pay stubs and looking for the exact date of the percentage change. And will check out the year end total for accuracy.
Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

PS: If memory serves correctly, it was August 2009 when we voted on an additional
5% pay cut. So you see by just totaling the two pay stub,s YTD totals, would not give you the correct amount for the year , if you did not also calculate the percent difference of 5% , Let me know if I,am missing something here. Maybe I have overlooked some minor detail.

Be the first one to admit I have not verified my W-2.....YET. But I have not heard of anybody that has stated their w-2 is wrong. Its starting to look as someone yelled "FIRE" a little early. Just the same I plan on checking it myself. Never say Never when it comes to YRC.

Or any other company for that matter.

A few years ago I questioned my W-2, due to the fact that my gross earnings on my paystubs did not match amount on W-2.

Company checked and corporate office had yet another figure in their computer. I was told "you can not go by what is on the paystub".

In that case I guess I couldn't go on anything they said.
