Roadway Express stopped in traffic jam on the I-77 bridge over the New River in Virginia as more informed drivers were on highway 52 alongside the river and underneath the bridge getting the freight there on time. June 2003.
I guess it shows, huh? Retirement is not far away. I suppose most guys look at that picture in frustration at sitting in the backup.....
You just have that positive, kind of "I am about to break out of prison" ora about you.
As far as the backup; I would look at it like this-
Here is a sample of one of my many delay calls:
Dispatch: "Central this is so and so."
Me: "Yeah, this is Snow Flake, I am sitting on a bridge somewhere. I am not moving. I wanted to call and let you know, so with that being said, why don't we go ahead and throw me on the clock."
Dispatch: "What is your location?"
Me: "I am on a bridge somewhere."
Dispatch: "Well, do you know where that bridge somewhere is located?"
Me: "Yes, it's over some water."
Dispatch-Sarcastically: "All right- I've got you stopped on a bridge 'somewhere'. Call us when you get rollin'"
Me: "Thank you. I will be sure to do that. Have a beautiful weekend with your family. My request to get home this weekend obviously wasn't that important."
Dispatch: "Well if you wanted to get home everyday, then you would've driven a garbage truck."
Me: "That would mean I would have to take a pay cut and only make as much money as you, but thanks for your concern."
Dispatch: "That's good enough Mr. Flake, we will talk to you when you get rolling."
That's the way it's done. Sit in traffic, go on the clock, stay on route.
Do you know what happens if a supe or safety man finds you on an unauthorized route???
