    Teamsters boss goes one-on-one with Herald on jobs, supply chain, Martin Walsh

    Two guys from Boston now have the most important labor jobs in the country, and Sean O’Brien said he’s ready to tackle the supply chain crunch, hiring woes and getting in sync with Labor Secretary Martin Walsh. “The stars lined up and we need to take advantage of it,” O’Brien told the Herald Monday, fresh off his victory as president-elect of the national Teamsters union. “Two Boston guys can solve a lot of problems,” he added, including Walsh in that equation. “We have a great relationship.” On jobs going unfilled, he said “we need to educate the next generation of workers by training them. They’re not connected to labor unions and we’ve got to go get them into education programs.”

    On the supply chain, he said America needs to bring the jobs sent overseas back home. That message came just hours before Samsung Electronics Co. announced it will build a $17 billion chip-making plant in Taylor, Texas, the Wall Street Journal first reported. That project is expected to create 1,800 jobs. “Let’s start manufacturing our own goods in this country,” O’Brien said. “There’s no reason not to. We have the best workforce and a great talent pool here.” He’s not convinced American consumers are stuck on buying the cheapest products they can. Made in America will mean a lot more post-pandemic, he’s betting.

    “I want a bigger, faster, stronger union,” he said. “We need strong contracts and to be strong politically.”

    Again on the supply chain that’s fueling holiday gift worries and inflation, he said it should be all-hands when it comes to trucking the goods to market. “I get that we’re all about the green economy, but utilize older trucks now to get supplies out.”

    O’Brien came home to a raucous reception Sunday, days after winning the election to lead the 1.4 million-member union at the national level. O’Brien worked the crowd at the Teamsters Local 25 headquarters in downtown Boston on Sunday where he addressed supporters and vowed to take on online mega-retailer Amazon in his effort to grow union numbers even as the tech giant has shut down efforts to unionize at warehouses across the country. O’Brien takes the reins from James Hoffa, the son of the union’s most infamous leader who has led the organization for 23 years.

    O’Brien — a sharp and longtime critic of Hoffa — siphoned support for his landslide election over recent years, vowing to rebuild the union that has struggled to keep membership numbers up in recent decades. The former Boston union boss seized on members’ frustrations with a 2018 contract negotiated by the Hoffa administration with UPS that was opposed by 54% of rank-and-file union members of the union to rally votes.

    O’Brien, a fourth-generation member of the union, has vowed to rebuild the Teamsters “as a militant, fighting union from bottom to top.” With roughly 1.4 million members, the Teamsters are one of the nation’s largest and most powerful labor unions. “Employers and politicians are on notice — the Teamsters union is back,” O’Brien said in a statement last week. “Fighting for workers is a full-contact sport. We call on every Teamster to put your helmet on and buckle your chinstraps because the fight begins today.”

      Uber and Lyft have sought for years to reach agreements with unions and lawmakers that would provide drivers with new perks while ensuring the companies can still classify them as independent contractors excluded from some traditional workplace protections. The Washington bill, which passed the state’s House and Senate this month, would prevent ride-hail drivers from being deemed employees but would extend them new benefits such as paid sick leave and a minimum pay rate for the time they spend transporting passengers. It would also preempt cities from regulating the ride-hail companies themselves and would give drivers the option to fund a “driver resource center,” which could represent workers in contesting their terminations.

      “Everybody wants to build their membership, everybody wants to represent workers, but this can’t be a money-grabbing association,” said O’Brien, who argues the drivers should instead be classified as full-fledged employees of the companies.

      The bill’s sponsor, Democrat Liz Berry, has described it as the “culmination” of years of negotiations between Uber, Lyft and union representatives. Governor Jay Inslee, a Democrat, hasn’t said whether he will sign the legislation, which was sent to his desk three weeks ago.
      Spokespeople for Inslee, Uber and Lyft didn’t immediately comment in response to inquiries. In an emailed statement, the Seattle-based Teamsters Local 117 said the bill will guarantee Uber and Lyft drivers the highest statewide labor standards anywhere in the U.S. “Uber and Lyft drivers — like all workers — deserve a labor movement that will respect their right to self-determination to set their own priorities,” the local union’s secretary-treasurer, John Scearcy, said.

      O’Brien’s predecessor, James Hoffa, had not taken a public position on the Washington bill, which was backed by Local 117 but opposed by the Teamsters’ regional joint council covering the state. O’Brien campaigned by offering a break from the Hoffa years, and on Thursday, he said that since he took office, the international union informed Inslee that it opposes the bill hammered out with Uber and Lyft.

      “We are open to having relationships with anyone,” O’Brien said, “but we’ve got to make sure they’re going to be beneficial to the workers and not be some type of charade to skirt their obligations under the employee relationship.”
