  • The best of New Hampshire

Many states in the northeast have unparalleled beauty and history. In New Hampshire the White Mountains are a playground of fun and adventure. Above ( no pun intended ! ) all else is the Mt. Washington auto road, just on the other side of North Conway. The auto road tops out at 6200 feet is the tallest mountain in the northeast. Nothing compared to some of the western states, but the mountain still packs a punch of adventure and danger going up that small, and some sections dirt road. The roads grading is around 12% with one section that has an 18% grade. There is an observatory at the top for weather information and a tourist facility with souvenirs and food.
The highest wind ever recorded on top of Mt. Washington was 231 MPH. The original building, which still exists, is chained to the ground to prevent the high winds from blowing it away.
For the faint of heart, you can ride an old steam cog railroad to the summit. That comes up the mountain from the western side. The auto road comes up the east side.
And just like the famous Pikes Peak hill climb in Colorado, the Mt. Washington auto road hosts the "Race to the Clouds" ( not this year ) and has been scheduled for July 2021.

Here is a pic of some of my buds riding up the mountain.

The Mt. Washington Auto Road Is 7.6 Miles Of White Knuckle Driving In New Hampshire That’s Not For The Faint Of Heart
There are plenty of drives you can take in the Granite State that will lead you to incredible views and extra-special destinations. The last few months of social-distancing have allowed us to hop in the car and experience things we normally would not have prioritized. And we’re pretty thankful for that! But this drive might be the granddaddy of them all! While not particularly long, the route is twisty and turn-y, offering incredible views and a few moments of chills.
Note that the observatory museum is closed during the 2020 season, but will hopefully re-open next season.
When you're done, simply get back into the car and make your way back to the bottom!
Some great pictures in the story. Hopefully we can get back to travel and adventure soon. A trip to visit the White Mountains and the beauty of the northeast is waiting.
