Looks like you guys in the North East are in for a big one. I hope all stay safe.

I remember working the night of the blizzard of 78. No work for me that day at Red Star so I ran a load of Emery Air Freight from Newark over to JFK. When I punched in at 11PM at the AFT terminal on South St. it had just started snowing. I bobtailed over to Emery and picked up the load. By the time I got over to PanAm at JFK there were blizzard conditions. PanAm had declared an embargo refusing all freight. It was lucky for me because at least I had some weight on the trailer.

The major highways were passable. But when I started down the exit ramp off of 1&9 in Newark to Emery there were cars abandoned in a snow drift and I couldn't back up. I was about a quarter of a mile from the terminal. A coupled of times that morning and afternoon I trudged thru the snow to check in, call home and get a cup of coffee. I sat in that tractor until around 5PM that afternoon when the mechanic picked me up out on the highway. We left the tractor stranded and running on the ramp.

That was a very profitable and frustrating day for me. I got paid for the 8 hours and 10 overtime. Plus back then it was the Martin Luther King holiday. I also got the holiday pay from AFT for working the day before and from Red Star for working the day after. Money was the only important thing to me back then. In later years I was a lot more cautious about going to work in snow storms.

I remember the Nor'easter that Carlisle had in "94". We got around four feet in a week... all you saw on the news were roofs caving in from the weight. Their were snowmobiles galore going around in the small town where I lived.Roads were closed all over the place and they had to find places where they could just store the plowed snow. One section of the roof in the old part of the terminal was creeking for days and actually twisted the beams holding it up... and what does management do... they come up with the bright idea to brace up the beams with 2X4's. Yep... not even 4X4's mind you... which would of been just as useless seeing how it twisted the steel beams. Even though they didn't use that area to load and unload... we had to go through it to get to the other side of the dock. All we could do is be careful when we went through and get a chuckle when we saw those measley 2X4's next to those thick beams. I remember getting off at 1900... got home... showered... ate and turned on the news to see that portion of the terminal's roof collapse. Luckily... no one got hurt like when we had that big fire... explosion the year before.

I may be wrong about being on the 1900 shift with the roof collapse... I could of been on that shift when we had the explosion and fire. If that was the case... I don't have a clue what shift I was working when the roof collapsed and apologize for that. It's hard to remember all the dates and times of the catastrophes we had at that Carolina terminal. I can't explain it but my memory just isn't what it used to be... lol

I was working back then for Barkers dept. stores and two of us were dispatched to Sea Land over in Weehawken NJ with loaded containers.. Started from the Bronx {dispatch said the loads had to make the ship} and we got as far as the Vince Lombardi rest area and spent the next 24 hours there.. It was good though as we had full tanks of fuel .. Little uncomfortable but at least I had someone to talk to..

Yeah we are in for the big one.. Last forecast I read this morning was for 18 to 24 inches.. We have been out to the store, Christmas packages sent, beer and toilet paper stocked up.. Trucks in the garage .. We are good.. Son has his plow guy hooked up because it is on him as we don't have to go out.. All I have to now is bring in extra firewood into the garage..

Well for a change we aren't supposed to get very much.I really have to laugh when the news says that 1-2 foot of snow is going to hit the northeast's they are going to roll up the streets.Around here we would hardly miss a beat, only thing that makes it bad is if there is a strong wind.
Hope all is safe for everyone affected.

Having run western NY in 70's for Barkers Dept. stores I learned quickly to drive in the snow.. Plus my wife is from a little town just off of rt 104 right on Lake Ontario.. I stopped a few times at my father in laws in the winter.. Snow belt ,their little town use to average around 300 inches per year and the town next them was about half of it.. Just the way the winds would come across the lake.. It could quite challenging to say the least.. In the early 70's they didn't use salt yet but rather a mixture of sand with a little salt mixed in.. we had the sanders on the trucks that helped when you were at a loading dock. That is when you learned to respect the weather and using the CB always helped.. One to two feet didn't close the schools back then.. We haven't had those type of winters in many years.. Route 17 in New York was snow covered from thanksgiving to Easter.. Where we are we can handle the big storms but when you get closer to the city you have more people who think because they have all wheel drive or 4X4 on their truck that they can just go as fast as they desire.. those are the people that probably cause 75% of the snow related accidents ..

Major snowstorm bears down on the Northeast, with blizzard conditions likely

What looks to be the biggest snowstorm in several years is on the way for the Northeast. Heavy snow and wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph will cover a widespread area with blizzard-like conditions, near-zero visibility and 1 to 2 feet of snowfall on Wednesday and Thursday.

Right now, more than 60 million people are covered by winter weather alerts. Blizzard-like conditions are expected in the Northeast, while the Mid-Atlantic can expect a messy mixture of snow, ice and rain. For many areas, it is a little early in the season for such an impactful winter storm.

When I first started at RedStar in 1998 it was really good times.. Being we had a one list barn i was advised to chose linehaul if I could.. Of course back then to be on linehaul you had to have the ability and clean license to be able to get your thruway tandems permit.. I got it with no problem and by August I was pulling two 45's or 48's when needed.. fast forward to winter.. Senior guys always took the Buffalo trip because they would go onto Erie Pa.. About a 470 mile trip with a few drop and hooks along the way.. But they wanted no part of it in the winter and chose turn runs instead.. being on the bottom of the road board it seemed every Monday night I would get the call your going to Buffalo.. It got to the point that I could sleep later as my wife would take the call and tell me where I was going.. I say this because during the winter there weren't too many days where you didn't run in the snow.. Best was being dispatched into Syracuse and then they would dispatch you to Buffalo with two empties because they needed the trailers for the Holland freight.. Those trips would be an experience especially when the roads were a bit icy.. Wiggle wagons supersized version.. But if I could go back and do it again?? I would do it in a heartbeat.. Our forecast here hasn't changed, no chance of the storm going out to sea.. Guess we will have a white Christmas..
