    ArcBest LTL carrier offering signing bonuses for new drivers, forklift operators

    FORT SMITH, Ark., July 8, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- ArcBest® (Nasdaq: ARCB), a leader in supply chain logistics, is pleased to announce that its less-than-truckload carrier, ABF Freight®, will host a two-day hiring event July 14-15 in Seattle, Washington.

    ABF Freight is seeking candidates for road drivers, city drivers and dock workers/forklift operators.

    "We are looking to add to our team in Seattle," said Seth Runser, ABF Freight president. "We know bringing on top talent is one of the most important things we can do to continue serving our customers with excellence."

    ABF is offering signing bonuses of up to $10,000 for new drivers and dock workers/forklift operators, available on the first day of employment. Driver candidates should be at least 21 years old, and dock worker candidates should be at least 18 years old.

    On July 14 and July 15, ABF will host interested candidates from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at its Seattle service center, 7226 S. 262 Street, Kent, Washington. No appointment is necessary.

    At the event, candidates can expect:

    Assistance with job applications
    Interviews with ABF recruiters
    Potential job offers made that day

    ABF drivers and dock workers receive excellent benefits, including medical, dental and vision coverage with no employee-paid premiums, and are covered by a pension plan at no expense to the employee.

      Wonder if I could get hired , get the payout on the first day, and after a week quit? I know when I started at Holland if anything happened on your thirty day probation you were finished, even if a plane fell outta the sky and landed on your equipment, you were done. Over here at UPS a guy had a preventable on his 30 days, and he only got a couple days off and he was right back to work, couldn't believe it. My how times have changed. Maybe I could get a job at ABF, maybe just knock a fender off the tractor during the first week, nothing major. Think I'd get to keep the 10 beans? Who would have ever thought a great job like that with Union benefits they would have to give people money as an incentive to think about coming there to work. When Smith's Transfer closed in 1988, I couldn't buy a union job.

        I think they would have some kind of stipulation in place that would make you obligated to pay all monies that they paid back within a certain time period. I know that when ABF had their free paid driver training school operating … they had them sign an agreement that if they quit before two years that they would have to reimburse ABF the money for training. I don’t know if there was a time limit for that to be paid or not but knowing ABF… I’m pretty sure there was.

        Times sure have changed since “88”… haven’t they. I remember the 80’s well… to get a good trucking union job… we all had to cross our fingers just hoping for a chance to get called for an interview… let alone get that other call to take a physical. Then” if “ we did get that call to work… we had to bust our ass daily just to keep it.

        I remember Roadway in Carlisle being known as the “29 day wonder” and if you weren’t exemplary they would let you go that 29th day because they could afford to be very choosy since they always had a mile long stack of applications. And I heard those 29 days were grueling… even after the 30 days.

        Carolina Freight… they were different… they wouldn’t start you on your thirty days… they started everyone out as casual and sometimes you had to work over a year as one before you even got that chance to get put on your 30 days. And once again… busting your ass was a necessity to keep it.

        As for ABF… their impediment always was… getting your application approved in the first place. If you got past that obstacle… it was pretty much clear sailing there on out. I wonder if they are more lenient when scrutinizing every fine detail and background checks on those applications today.

        I guess one could say that it from… “you’re lucky to have a job” to “you’re lucky to have an employee”. And a company can consider themselves hitting the jackpot if they happen to be lucky enough to find one of those rare “conscientious employees” this day and age.

                I had an accident with my personal vehicle before getting my CDL. I had to wait for it to be 2 or 3 years behind me before any decent company would even give me a chance...

                  As of June 29th,it was 15,now it's down to 10...Terminal manager assumed when ABF implemented this incentive,they'd have people lined up around the block to apply...Never happened,'still',and I mean 'STILL' can't get drivers...The Union doesn't even come into play anymore,these young people don't care,they want the money 'up front'(Saia-Fed-Ex-XPO-32,33,34 dollars an hour),somewhere in that range,just to name a few...ABF,just got a raise,26 and change...But the main obstacle in my opinion,they DO NOT want to work the dock...These young people would rather put up with all the 'non-union' BS and harassment at these non-union companies,then secure a good Union job with 'protection',a guaranteed future with ''great'' medical and a pension...DO NOT want to work the dock...They have no clue...I remember how tough it was to get hired at ABF,it took me almost 5 months to get hired,they wanted to know this,wanted to know that,for Christ sake,they even wanted my 'unemployment snubs'...WTF!!!!...These days,one question...''Are You Breathing?''...Ok,your hired!!!!...20 or 25 days to make the list,here's 15,now,10 grand,with the stipulation of staying for at least 3 years...Yes Docker,times sure as hell have changed,this AIN'T our Grandparents Union anymore!!!!

                    I delivered to a high school Tech school today.
                    The receiver told me he went to the chain Dollar store at the busy strip mall on Saturday and they began turning the lights off as he shopped at 3 in the afternoon.
                    No staff.
                    They closed at 3 in the afternoon.
                    Why work when you can get free government checks?

                      The healthcare is being given by government. The rent paid. The food paid. Mortgages delayed. Utilities.

                      The unions supported all that they get.
                      Now we don't even have strike funds.
                      Looks like we gave those away too.
                      They don't work and the pay goes up.
                      We don't work and they close the place unless we take less.

                      Up is down and black is white and evil is good and good is evil.

                        I can't tell you how many times I have heard these words from the younger generation in 2013.

                        As a matter of fact... one was considered pugnacious to even consider striking and foolish to even mention the word...

                        A lively forum where truckers, who are normally opinionated people, go online to vent on the issues of the day. One recent post, from the handle of "Docker," who ostensibly is a unionized employee at ABF Freight System Inc., contained the image of a political button inscribed with the warning that "We Don't Want to Strike, But We Will!"

                        That could easily be dismissed as an idle, even foolish, threat since a Teamster strike could push the financially troubled less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier, which has lost about $230 million since 2009, over the edge, with thousands of jobs going with it. Yet it should be remembered that the 7,500 or so Teamsters employed at Fort Smith, Ark.-based ABF have been known to march to their own collective drummer.

                              That is truly sad as far as I'm concerned ABF is at the top of the food chain in freight between the pension and health and welfare that's $40,000 and change a year isn't it , before you start getting your wages. I don't think the young people know anything about being in the union or the benefits of it which is truly sad and I think it's a sign of the times. Even over here at UPS our wages are pretty good when you top out, but I doubt they pay that much between the benefits and our pension .I know the benefits are a little better than what we had in freight in the southern conference through central states, but I still have the same insurance ID , that I've had since my oldest son was born in 84 still the wonderful Central states, and I mean that sincerely just the UPS plan. Most of us that have been in this business for a little while 30 years or better remember how damn hard it was to get a union job when your employer went out of business, and it's hard to wrap your head around them paying for help . The scab outfits might be paying a little more, but if someone stays there like most of us have in union jobs, more than likely they are going to need their insurance and I bet you they can't touch what we have, plus you get sick and they let you go at those places. They Thin the herd at Old Dominion and Saia when things get a little slow and it doesn't matter who you are or how long you been there there's a bull's-eye on your back, wouldn't that be great work somewhere like that a couple of decades you get sick , and they don't need you anymore. I cannot blame people not wanting to be gone running a road board as I missed a lot with my kids when they were young and I regret it now but nobody had to go in debt when it was time for college and we always had great insurance And if you have kids you're going to use it.
