Default Postal Workers launch campaign against anticipated Trump privatization scheme

PITTSBURGH — Anticipating the Trump administration will propose privatizing the U.S. Postal Service – eliminating services and killing well-paid union jobs – the Postal Workers (APWU) launched a mass campaign to derail Trump’s scheme even before the pro-corporate president unveils it.

And at a rally in downtown Pittsburgh on August 21, during the second day of the union’s convention there, APWU picked up strong support from Sen. Bernie Sanders, Ind.-Vt., who promised to introduce legislation to stop Trump’s plan in its tracks. Dozens of U.S. House members, from both parties, support a resolution – which doesn’t have the force of law – against privatization, too.

The rally and the convention occurred just before a postal “reform” commission, headed by Trump Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, sent its still-secret report to the president on how to privatize the USPS. That’s what Trump ordered – along with service cuts – when he set up the panel.

That drew the ire of the convention’s 2,000 delegates, Sanders, other speakers, and APWU President Mark Dimondstein. “Now we are facing the battle of our lifetimes,” Dimondstein declared in his keynote address. Other speakers included Government Employees (AFGE) President J. David Cox and the Rev. William Barber, co-chair of the National Poor People’s Campaign.

Unionists, allies rally against Trump Postal Service privatization scheme

WASHINGTON—If GOP President Donald Trump and his Wall Street backers convince Congress to privatize the U.S. Postal Service, youthful postal clerk Arrion Brown of D.C., a Postal Workers activist, says he may get laid off and have to find another job to support his two young children.

If Trump’s plan seeks to cut costs, retired Postal Worker Grace Jenkins says, “they’ll want to stop us coming to your house every day” to deliver the mail. The privatizers – Wall Street – “would cut service and deliver only where it’s profitable,” adds Letter Carriers Secretary-Treasurer Nichol Rhine of Branch 8 in Lincoln, Neb.

As a result, the postal unions – NALC, APWU, the Mail Handlers/Laborers and the Rural Letter Carriers – would wind up fighting for members’ jobs, says Rhine. And retirees’ pensions, too, adds Jenkins, of APWU Local 0140 in Southern Maryland. And several other people said their unions would be the first target of the privatizers.

Another privatization that will screw over the workers and hand big money to the wealthy elite. What more can this administration do to harm the working class ? Wait and see.

White House says USPS should privatize

The hunt is on for a new postmaster general and some say whoever gets that job could have a big impact on how you get your mail.
That’s because the Trump Administration wants to sell off and privatize parts of the postal service.
But some who are against that idea say it will make getting your mail tougher and cost some mail workers their jobs.
The White House says the U.S. Postal Service should be a private business, not part of the government.
But Mark Dimondstein, President of the American Postal Workers Union, says mail service is too important to privatize.
In 2018, President Trump called for a task force to restructure or even sell off the post office.

Not about privatization but definitely an issue that has been in the news for a long time.

Nationwide “U.S. Mail is Not for Sale” call-in February 25
WASHINGTON—One house of Congress won, the other to go along. That’s the objective of the “U.S. Mail Is Not For Sale” call-in day postal union members and their allies plan to stage on Feb. 25.

Their goal: To convince the GOP-run Senate to agree with the House, and end the biggest financial drain on the USPS. That drain, a $5.5 billion yearly prepayment for future health care costs, sends the Postal Service into the red – and gives right-wing privatizers and President Trump an excuse to sell the Postal Service.

The House passed the bill, The USPS Fairness Act, HR2382, earlier this year, 309-106. Now the Postal Workers (APWU), the Letter Carriers (NALC), other postal unions and other unions – notably the Office and Professional Employees, which posted the call-in on their website – want to push the Senate to pass its version of the legislation, S2965.

Details of the call-in number are on www.apwu.org, or by texting ACTION on your cell phone to 91990 to receive a reminder the day before about contacting your senators.

The mandatory yearly prepayment of future health care costs which the GOP-run Congress imposed on USPS in 2006 is responsible for the entire “deficit” the agency runs.

I didn't see this posted anywhere on the site and it is a big deal! Thanks to Bernie I am now aware of it!
Top Republican fundraiser and Trump ally named postmaster general, giving president new influence over Postal Service
A top donor to President Trump and the Republican National Committee will be named the new head of the Postal Service, putting a top ally of the president in charge of an agency where Trump has long pressed for major changes in how it handles its business.

The Postal Service’s board of governors confirmed late Wednesday that Louis DeJoy, a North Carolina businessman who is currently in charge of fundraising for the Republican National Convention in Charlotte, will serve as the new postmaster general.

The action will install a stalwart Trump ally to lead the Postal Service, which he has railed against for years, and probably move him closer than ever before to forcing the service to renegotiate its terms with companies and its own union workforce. Trump’s Treasury Department and the Postal Service are in the midst of a negotiation over a $10 billion line of credit approved as part of coronavirus legislation in March.

Never knew Trump want's the Post office to be privatized .. He has said he wants to turn it around so they don't lose billions every year.. Think it started when he found out how much Amazon pays to have a package delivered.. Plus the end of line deliveries that they make for UPS and FedEx.. Another losing proposition..

And the Washington post is a subscription site.. I cannot access your link.. As far as the guy Trump appointed.. Well he is a businessman and being in charge of the Fundraising for the RNC in Charlotte he evidently is doing a good job..

Trump has long railed against the Postal Service, particularly claiming the agency has been swindled by e-commerce giants that use the post office to send out millions of packages, such as Amazon.

Late last month, Trump blasted the Postal Service as "a joke" and vowed to block financial aid for the struggling agency unless it raised prices for packages "four times or five times."

Trump has called for the post office to hit Amazon and other tech companies with much higher prices for packages to make up for its budget woes. The president has also signaled that he won't support giving the agency billions of dollars in loans as the administration tries to protect the economy with aid packages during the coronavirus pandemic.

"They don't want to raise it, because they don't want to insult Amazon," Trump said at the time. "If they don't raise the price, I'm not signing anything.

I'm pretty sure we have record of that here on our site. If it's related to Trump's Union busting agenda? I bet it's here.
