Default 3,000 Kroger employees prepare for possible strike

I happen to shop at a Kroger owned store, Smiths Food and Drug. Curious to see if anything will happen out here in the Southwest.

About 3,000 Kroger associates may go on strike next week in the Mountain Empire.

According to a news release from the United Food & Commercial Workers, a contract for Kroger associates from 41 stores from Kingsport, Tennessee, to Harrisonburg, Virginia, is affected.

Thousands of Kroger associates in the Roanoke Valley have been working without a contract since midnight on May 8, after the company presented a last-minute proposal that would have provided only slight wage increases and no paid sick days for store associates, the release states. The proposal would also fall short of renewing Kroger’s commitment to providing health insurance for its retirees, it adds.

Kroger Co. union workers at 41 stores in the Roanoke, Va., area have voted to authorize a strike.

The roughly 1,100 United Food and Commercial Workers Local 400 members unanimously voted Wednesday to reject Cincinnati-based Kroger’s offer and authorized a strike. The union represents about 3,000 employees.

    Hard to say
I see different units are honoring the US foods strike in various spots, but they don't last more than a few days.

Standing Together, Kroger Workers Win Better Offer
West Virginia, VA - After 1100 members of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 400 voted to authorize a strike at 41 Kroger Grocery Stores in Virginia, West Virginia and Tennessee, the union has reached a tentative contract deal with the company.

The union says it’s a much better deal than the company’s previous “last best and final offer,” where the highest raise that anyone at these stores would ever see would be 25 cents. Local 400 Communications Manager Jonathan Williams:

[Jonathan Williams]: “The same week that we had this offer, the company gave its millionaire CEO a 17 percent raise. The company made 2 and a half billion dollars last year alone, but our associates, who actually keep the stores running, who actually make the company a billion-dollar success, they get a quarter. And that was enough to upset a huge number of our members. They unanimously voted to authorize a strike after unanimously voting to reject the 25 cent raise. They were entirely unified against it. It sent a very loud and clear message to Kroger that this company can more than afford it, and we’re willing to stand up and fight for it. Shortly after…I mean very shortly after this vote was taken, we were getting calls from the company to re-open negotiations.”

Hasn't been presented to union members yet.

We will present the complete details of this latest offer to our entire membership at our next contract meeting on June 8.

Kroger workers agree to contract, avoiding strike

Kroger union members voted to approve a new contract on Wednesday, ending several weeks of contention between the grocer and its employees.

However, not everyone was happy about it.

Tensions ran high in a meeting that stretched more than three hours at the Berglund Center in Roanoke. About 800 members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 400 union gathered to vote on the latest contract proposal from Kroger, which included a pay increase, extended health care for retirees and other benefits.

Many in the union, though, thought Kroger could offer higher wages and more benefits than the contract provided and voted to reject it. The union has about 3,000 members and covers 41 stores in Virginia, East Tennessee and West Virginia.
