  • A positive image !

Thought I would post this story of a driver's good deed. His name is Danny Baker and he works out of the Greenville SC terminal.

Company driver delivers happiness for 6-year-old boy
On a delivery last June, Baker met a special kid, 6-year-old Sawyer White from Duncan, South Carolina. According to a thank you letter Sawyer’s mom wrote to ABF, Baker made quite an impression on the boy, and the kid (and his sister) made one on the trucker.
Baker came back the next day to give the boy a die-cast ABF truck and a company cap. Baker also brought Sawyer’s sister Ellie a princess doll.

“He made my day,” Baker said of Sawyer. The driver said that with all the daily issues of being a driver it was “a breath of fresh air” to see a kid so excited to see him when he made that delivery. “The joy that came across that young man’s face was without a doubt a highlight of my time at ABF.”
“Danny does a great job for ABF and has received many thank you emails and call-ins to the terminal,” said Craig Crews, ABF’s service center manager in Greenville, South Carolina. “This young man made a true difference in Danny’s life as well by simply being (a) wide-eyed, excited young man that has a true passion for tractor-trailers.”

Posting this as I feel it presents a positive image for truckers, and veterans.

Joseph Campbell Wins Kenworth Truck as Part of Military Hiring Program
Joseph Campbell stood on stage at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington on Dec. 6, fighting back tears. Just before he walked to the podium, he had hugged his wife, Debbie, his father, Joseph, and mother, Littie. The family had journeyed up from their hometown of Elgin, S.C., and had been anxiously sitting in the room waiting for the news in the Chamber’s famous flag room.
On stage, Campbell, 47, was holding the keys to a new, fully loaded Kenworth T680 truck. Moments before, he was named the winner of the Transition Trucking: Driving for Excellence Award, which is given out annually with the Chamber’s Hiring Our Heroes division, Kenworth and Fastport, a national group that assists veterans with finding careers after they leave the military. The award recognizes rookie truck drivers who also are military veterans.
In January 2000, four years after leaving the Marines, Campbell re-enlisted, this time in the Army. During his 24 years in uniform in the two branches of the service, he deployed to Iraq in 2003 and served at several major military installations including Fort Knox (Ky.), Fort Bragg (N.C.) and Fort McCoy (Wis.). Along the way, he earned two bachelor’s degrees and a masters in performance management.

Here is another ABF driver, awarded the "Highway Angel" for helping a motorist in a car fire.

Company driver honored for helping at car fire
A driver for ABF Freight System, Inc. is being honored for his efforts last fall to ensure the safety of a young driver.
The Truckload Carriers Association named Robert Digrazia a Highway Angel for his actions in extinguishing a vehicle fire and helping save a woman driving a car in Florida.
For his willingness to assist his fellow drivers, TCA has presented Digrazia with a certificate, patch, lapel pin, and truck decals. His employer has also received a certificate acknowledging their driver as a Highway Angel.

It's always nice to acknowledge an act of caring by a Teamster brother.

UPS Teamster Helps Save Driver's Life
When a life-threatening accident occurred recently on a Los Angeles-area freeway during a rainstorm, Teamsters Local 396 member Steve Cummings went to extraordinary lengths to rescue a motorist in danger.
Cummings stopped his tractor-trailer rig, a UPS feeder truck, which prevented other cars from careening into the car of a seriously injured motorist, who just had an accident.
“I was glad I was in the right place at the right time,” Cummings said of the incident early last week. “I helped the woman get out of her car and made sure no one other vehicle hit her car.”
Cummings called the California Highway Patrol and stayed at the scene of the accident for about a half hour until he was assured the injured motorist was receiving the critical care she needed to survive her injuries.
“We are proud of Brother Steve Cummings and his heroic actions,” said Ron Herrera, Local 396 Secretary-Treasurer. “Steve is a 39-year member of Local 396 and 33-year safe driver with UPS. His actions helped save this woman’s life.”
Cummings, a steward at UPS, was recognized by the daughter of the injured motorist in a Tweet. “This UPS driver blocked oncoming cars, and stayed with her,” the daughter tweeted.

This story reflects how truckers are now being treated by strangers and companies all over the country.
From people handing out gift cards, to free girl scout cookies and meals. If you scroll though the story it shows many people performing random acts of kindness.
It mentions ABF freight, Kenworth trucks, individual trucking companies, and so many private citizens that just want to express their gratitude.
            Thank you all.

How America Is Thanking Truckers During the Coronavirus Crisis
As America grapples with the coronavirus and daily life is altered, the nation's truck drivers are among those who are risking their personal health and doing the hard work to keep products moving to stores, hospitals and elsewhere. And their effort is being recognized.

With the reports of farmers dumping milk and other food products, this story brings a smile to my face. As the story says, most food banks, churches and other distribution sources for needy families just don't have the ability to store perishable foods. Our church has one commercial refrigerator and 7 freezers. When we get products that need refrigeration it must be handed out that same week. The only milk we ever get is the boxed, long shelf life product.

Dairy Max, Convoy team up to deliver fresh milk to food banks in Texas
While dairy is one of the most requested items by food-insecure families, fresh milk is usually scarce at food banks because many centers simply don’t have the facilities to store perishable goods.
However, Dairy Max, a nonprofit dairy council made up of 900 dairy farm families across an eight-state region, and Seattle-based Convoy, a digital freight network, are teaming up to deliver thousands of gallons of fresh milk to food banks in Texas.
The goal is to expand the pilot program to mass distribution sites in other states including Louisiana, Colorado, Wyoming and Oklahoma with Dairy Max connecting local dairy processors participating in the USDA milk donation programs with Feeding America food banks.
As schools closed and jobs were lost because of the coronavirus pandemic, Dairy Max members were concerned about how to continue to feed kids and families during this crisis, according to Jennie McDowell, director of business development of Dairy Max in Texas.
Feeding America estimates that more than 54 million Americans are now food insecure as a result of the pandemic.
In the past three weeks, McDowell said Convoy has distributed 26,000 gallons of milk, supplied by Borden Dairy, to mass distribution sites that are feeding thousands of people each day, including the State Fair of Texas grounds in Dallas and to stadium parking lots.
Another 20,000 gallons of milk are expected to be delivered to food banks next week, she said.

This story ended well with the quick action this driver took to save a young life.

Covenant driver honored for helping child in distress
The Truckload Carriers Association has named Chris Delancey, a driver for Covenant from Chattanooga, Tennessee, a Highway Angel, for quickly responding to pleas for help for an unresponsive child.
Delancey lost his own 18-month-old daughter to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome a year ago. “I saw my daughter’s face in that little girl. Something told me to keep on going.” He continued to work on the child. “Just as an ambulance pulled up she took a breath,” Delancey recalled. “It’s music to your ears. Although she had a weak pulse, she was breathing. She opened her eyes and said, ‘Daddy.’” Delancey quickly scooped her up and ran to the ambulance and handed her over.

With all that has happened the past couple of days and this week, it's still the good people that bring out the best in others.
This young man saw a need to help his community and the people that recognized that stepped forward to help him.

A teen who spent 10 hours cleaning up after a protest is rewarded with a car and a college scholarship
When Antonio Gwynn Jr. saw the damage from protests in his hometown of Buffalo, New York, he grabbed a broom, bought some trash bags and started cleaning the streets by himself.
He started at 2 a.m. on Monday and did not stop cleaning for the next 10 hours. When an organized group of neighbors arrived later that morning to start clearing the damage, they found that Gwynn had already done most of the work.
Gwynn is an 18-year-old high school senior. He told CNN that he saw on the local news that Bailey Avenue in Buffalo was covered in glass and garbage, and he knew people needed to use that street to get to work in the morning.
Matt Block saw Gwynn’s story on the news and decided to give him his prized 2004 red Mustang convertible. Block, 27, told CNN the car is one he wanted since he was a child, but these days he is only using it occasionally. He saw Gwynn ask for some car buying advice on Facebook, and Matt decided to offer up his sports car.
Local businessman Bob Briceland learned of Block’s gift, and he decided to extend a year of free auto insurance coverage through his insurance agency.
Upon hearing Gwynn’s story, Medaille College in Buffalo offered him a full scholarship where he plans to study business starting this fall. One of his many career goals is to open a cleaning business.

This happened last Saturday. A UPS driver with terminal cancer was given a parade and the chance to sit in his package car one more time.

Surprise parade and final wish made for long time York County UPS driver battling cancer
For nearly three decades, Jason Rentzel of Springettsburg Township, York County, has served York County; running countless routes for the United Parcel Service (UPS) as a delivery man.
Now, at just 45-years-old, Jason battles stage four cancer. One of his final wishes was to clean out his locker, sit in his delivery track and see his adopted family, one last time.
A handful of Jason's coworkers went above and beyond to make his wish come true. Within a day or two, they pulled together a surprise parade lead by a UPS tractor trailer, firetrucks, FedEx trucks then followed by more UPS trucks. Some FedEx workers from the same routes as Jason's.

Kid Who Cleaned Up After Protests Gets Another Reward
A Buffalo teenager who spent 10 hours cleaning up glass and garbage following protests in his city got a job offer Saturday from the mayor. It was the latest honor for Antonio Gwynn Jr. since word of his actions began circulating a week ago. The 18-year-old high school senior already has received a 2004 Ford Mustang from an admirer, reports the AP, and Medaille College in Buffalo will provide him a full scholarship. Mayor Byron Brown offered him a job in the city's buildings department. “I’m actually pretty excited because I didn’t have an actual plan, but now this is helping me put more of my life ahead,” Gwynn told reporters after being recognized at a city ceremony.

The Truckload Carriers Association named Greg Truitt, from Mount Airy, North Carolina, a Highway Angel, for stopping to help an older woman alone in her car that had gone off the road.
For his willingness to assist his fellow drivers, TCA has presented Truitt with a certificate, patch, lapel pin, and truck decals. His employer, ABF Freight System, has also received a certificate acknowledging their driver as a Highway Angel.
