  • Kroger warehouse workers to strike, demand safer work conditions

Workers at the Kroger warehouse in Memphis — and across the country — will strike today, demanding safer conditions amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The strike is a coordinated effort among food supply chain workers, including those who work at PepsiCo and Tyson Foods.

The workers are demanding that production lines be adjusted for social distancing; a plan for testing, tracing, shielding, and treating workers be put in place; paid sick and family leave, hazard pay, access to PPE, and testing capacity; and that contact tracing must maintain worker confidentiality for undocumented workers and their families.

According to a statement issued in support of the food supply chain workers, nationally, more than 5,000 of those workers have tested positive for COVID-19 and more than 20 have died.

Early in the pandemic, members of Teamsters Local 667 held a walk out at the Kroger Memphis distribution center. Kroger responded with a $2 hazard pay. It was later announced that they are taking that away.

Diamond walnut workers rally for hazard pay at Stockton plant

STOCKTON — Workers at Diamond of California’s Stockton walnut processing plant wanted to make a point: Their jobs are essential and they show up to work every day despite the health risks to them and their families during the COVID-19 pandemic. For that, they feel they deserve hazard pay like so many others in the food-processing industry.

Wednesday afternoon, they held a Day of Action outside the iconic plant at 1050 Diamond St. in southeast Stockton to bring attention to their appeal for extra compensation. The event was organized by the Food Processing Division of Teamsters Local 856 in conjunction with other events at food plants across the nation.
“Teamsters International is taking this action in light of the new reality of COVID-19. These workers are first responders reporting to work every day, risking their health and that of their families when they return home,” Alvarado said.

The action is also aimed at getting the attention of Congress and state legislatures to enact uniform rules across the food processing industry putting new safety protocols into place.

This obviously was a huge deal across the nation. Good for Teamsters!

Teamsters Hold National Food Supply Chain Day of Action

In a nationwide protest, Teamsters working in all areas of the country’s food supply chain today demanded state governments and employers take action to keep them safe and protect the nation’s food supply amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Workers in more than 30 cities raised their voices to demand change in the wake of recent COVID-19 outbreaks in the food industry, specifically the need for enforceable safety standards, government funding for paid sick and family leave, hazard pay, access to PPE, and testing capacity.

The protests took place outside of major U.S. food facilities, including the Kroger warehouse in Memphis, TN and the UNFI warehouse in Denver, CO, and were held in cities from La Habra, CA to Springfield, MO to Houston, TX. COVID-19 cases have been reported at more than 115 meat and poultry processing facilities across 19 states, with over 5,000 food supply chain workers testing positive and more than 20 killed from the virus.
At least a dozen facilities have shut down in response to COVID-19 outbreaks. As a result, the food supply chain, which accounts for more than 20 million jobs and over 5% of the U.S. GDP, is experiencing major shortages and is at risk of further disruptions as the pandemic continues.

Re: Kroger warehouse workers to strike, demand safer work conditions

Hundreds of Teamsters at Kroger warehouse and distribution have been working on a extended contract for almost a year.
Kroger increased the workforce with non-union employees from unknown areas thereby risking those already working there during this health crisis.

WISCONSIN TEAMSTERS PUT AT RISK BY KROGER
On Tuesday, November 10, Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers (D), signed Executive Order 94 in response to the record setting surge of COVID-19 cases impacting Wisconsinites. Earlier the same day, Kroger without any announcement to Local 200, increased their work force with 75 nonunion workers and growing, creating conditions in an already congested warehouse that place Local 200 members and their families at risk.

“Our Teamsters and their families are priority one. Kroger without notice brought workers from parts unknown with no communication to us or any plan for our members’ health and safety during this crisis in Wisconsin. The actions of Kroger are irresponsible and demonstrate Kroger places profits over safety,” said Tom Bennett, Local 200 Secretary-Treasurer.

The 800 Teamster drivers and warehouse workers work at the 1.1 million square foot Kroger distribution center in Oconomowoc that serves 150 supermarkets throughout Wisconsin, including Pick ’n Save, Copps, Metro Market, and within the Chicagoland area, Mariano’s.
