  • Teamsters helping Cedar Rapids Iowa

This is what a good organization does. It helps the community in times of need and despair.

TEAMSTERS PITCH IN TO HELP CEDAR RAPIDS FAMILIES
Members of Local 238 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, have opened their union hall, turning it into a help center for local families who were affected by the recent Derecho storm. Trees were flattened and homes and belongings scattered when the storm hit on August 10.

Immediately after the storm the local union and its members began collecting essential items such as bottled water, diapers, and non-perishable food for the affected community.

“There is a growing humanitarian crisis and the government is failing the people,” said Jesse Case, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 238. “Tens of thousands of people were left without electricity, food and water. Tent cities have popped up around apartment complexes with damaged roofs. Local 238 has set up a food distribution program and we’re collecting thousands of pounds of essential goods and distributing them to families in need.”

Roy Gillespie, IBT disaster relief coordinator, arrived in Iowa to find the devastation looking every bit like what the aftermath of a hurricane would resemble had it hit in a southern state. “I couldn’t believe what I was seeing was in the state of Iowa,” Roy said.

There is still a need for help in the Cedar Rapids area. The Teamsters hall is providing disaster relief. They are asking for volunteers and donations to help the community though this crisis.

Teamsters Hall still providing disaster relief assistance daily in Cedar Rapids, volunteers and donations needed
Disaster relief assistance is still available for those in need at the Teamsters Hall from noon to 4:30 p.m. every day at 5000 J Street SW in Cedar Rapids.
The Teamsters Union, along with other unions and members of the community, opened a disaster relief center last week.
According to Teamsters, thousands of storm victims have picked up food, water, tarps, flashlights, diapers and other essentials. Additionally, Teamsters have delivered essential good to people without transportation.
“This crisis is not over, with pockets of people who are still without power, money, supplies or help” said Jesse Case, Teamsters Secretary-Treasurer. “We are seeing a lot of elderly people, immigrants and others who still need basic and essential assistance, as well as people who are unemployed and just have no means to recover from another crisis without some assistance.”
Teamsters said volunteers and donations are still needed. Anyone in need of assistance or anyone who wants to donate, can stop by the Teamsters Hall on week days and this weekend.
