Marine fired for slamming military over Afghan exit issues warning to superiors

The maverick Marine fired after he released a now-viral video slamming the US military for botching the exit from Kabul, issued a clear threat to his aging superiors Saturday. “The baby boomer’s turn is over,” Lt. Col. Stuart Scheller told The Post. “I demand accountability, at all levels. If we don’t get it, I’m bringing it.” He also quoted Thomas Jefferson, saying “every generation needs a revolution.” Scheller’s family and former troops say they’re not surprised the officer sacrificed his career in order to tell his truth. “It takes real courage to do what he did and that was Stu all the way,” Juan Chavez, 33, of Valparaiso, Ind., who served under Scheller from 2011 to 2014, told The Post Saturday. “He was a magnificent leader, a breath of fresh air, who was always going to do what’s right, even if it goes against the grain.”

Scheller’s father, Stuart Sr., told The Post his son was “the real deal, a Marine’s Marine. People will follow him to the ends of the earth. He has put his life on the line for fellow Marines so putting his career on the line like this does not surprise us.” Scheller, 41, a 17-year Marine veteran three years short of qualifying for a full pension, went viral Thursday after he posted a four-minute, 45-second video to Facebook in which he appeared in uniform and ripped into military leadership following the devastating suicide bombing at Kabul airport, which killed 13 US service members and at least 169 Afghans. He specifically called out Marine Corps Commandant Gen. David H. Berger, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley. “People are upset because their senior leaders let them down, and none of them are raising their hands and accepting accountability or saying, ‘We messed this up,’” he said.

Stuart Scheller Sr. said his son idolized his grandfather, a World War II vet who landed on the beach at Normandy, and always wanted to go into the military. “He’s still on the battlefield protecting his men and women,” Scheller Sr. said. “It’s interesting that no one (in the military) has answered his call for accountability. Their answer was to fire him I guess. It’s a sad day for America.” His son has said he won’t talk to reporters until he finishes his “formal” exit from the Marines. A married father of three boys who lives in Jacksonville, NC, Scheller seemed to have had a brilliant military career before he did the unthinkable and broke rank with the Marine Corps. He received a Combat V for Valor and a Bronze Star. But now he’s a hero to many in the military for, as one person commented, “coming out with what everyone was thinking but was afraid to say.”

In his video, Scheller said that the US should never have abandoned its most strategic airbase – Bagram – early this summer. Milley said on June 23 that Bagram “wasn’t tactically or operationally necessary” for the US military’s final exit from Afghanistan. Scheller said some of his fellow officers, while supportive, urged him to take down the video. “Obviously I didn’t take it down,” Scheller wrote in a later Facebook post. “I’ll offer this … we can’t ALL be wrong. If you all agree … then step up. They only have the power because we allow it. What if we all demanded accountability?” More than 30,000 people, some of whom served under Scheller, have liked and commented on his video. “Proud to have served under your command sir, we’ll follow you to the pits of hell and back,” wrote Zach Olbrys of Worcester, Mass. Ryan Holland of Lexington, Ky. wrote: “I see a seat in Washington in your near future!! It was always an honor serving with you sir! Semper Fi! “It took big brass balls to do what you did … [knowing] it came at a huge risk to your career personally,” wrote Paul Zedalis. “An Officer with integrity … hard to find at the senior levels these days. My hat is off to you Sir!”

                    Re: Joe Biden's America.

The fatal failure of Gen. Mark A. Milley over closing Bagram Air Base

Gen. Mark A. Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs, must go.President Biden claims that the military advised him to close Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan and instead use Kabul’s airport to evacuate Americans. They were the ones who said the Afghan army would hold, that the pullout would go smoothly. If Biden is telling the truth, this disaster is on Milley’s watch. Or Biden is lying (the more likely scenario, based on what sources inside the administration are saying) and Milley failed to do his duty and push back against a commander-in-chief who is making deadly decisions. Either way, he is derelict in his duty — and must either take responsibility for what went wrong or tell Americans the truth about their president.

Biden was reportedly so intent on drawing down the number of troops in Afghanistan to less than 1,000, a force not large enough to secure Bagram, that we gave up its strategic advantage. Not only that, but we left in the dead of night, abandoning weapons and vehicles to the Taliban and demoralizing our Afghan allies. That forced Marines to protect the perimeter of Hamid Karzai International Airport, a situation that the parent of one of the 13 service members who lost their lives compared to a “turkey shoot.” Biden should never have left the safety of evacuating Americans in the hands of the Taliban, or put these young men and women — 11 Marines, one Navy member and one Army soldier — in such danger.

It’s hard to think of a worse way to handle this pullout. Biden likes to blame former President Donald Trump’s deal with the Taliban for the situation, but even setting aside that Biden could have negotiated to extend the deadline, he’s been president since January. Milley has been chairman of the Joint Chiefs since 2019. What have they been doing all these months? The US could have organized an evacuation from Bagram and held the base until Aug. 31 or longer, if necessary.

Instead, Milley spent his time defending critical race theory to Congress, while Biden ate ice cream. And the response of the administration since? Let’s talk about COVID, climate change, putting our kids in debt for generations. Biden on Sunday angrily turned away from reporters when he was asked about Afghanistan, saying he’d only talk about Hurricane Ida. Anything but the mistakes that were made.Biden and the generals cannot bear to hear the truth. Marine Corps Lt. Col. Stuart Scheller posted, “People are upset because their senior leaders let them down and none of them are raising their hands and accepting accountability or saying, ‘We messed this up.’ ” For this, he was stripped of command. Scheller knew he was risking his career, but honesty was more important.

                    Will Milley show such courage?

                        Re: Joe Biden's America.

U.S. Forces and Allies Abandon Billions of Dollars Worth of Weapons, Vehicles, and Gear

The Biden administration has failed so absolutely in various sectors of the Afghanistan withdrawal that the sheer mass of the whole can obfuscate specific instances of gross negligence. An example of this would be the scale of abandoned gear, weapons, and vehicles U.S. forces have left behind. To the media’s credit, the focus has been on the herculean efforts of private entities and the military to get contractors, U.S. citizens, and Afghan SIVs (Special Immigrant Visa holders) out of the country. What’s more, those on the ground and piloting the aircraft must work around the ineffectual bureaucrats, who are their commanders and political leaders. With our priorities acknowledged — people before pistols — the billions of dollars of US taxpayers’ dollars in the form of armored vehicles, weapons systems, and communications equipment now in the hands of an enemy force is contemptible. Perhaps even worse is the administration’s seeming cover-up of the exact figures regarding this missing materiel.

Adam Andrzejewski of Forbes did a manful job this past week exposing a number of the administration’s specious claims. Audits of military gear in Afghanistan have been pulled from the Government Accountability Office’s website because “the State Department requested we temporarily remove and review reports on Afghanistan to protect recipients of U.S. assistance that may be identified through our reports and thus subject to retribution,” according to a GAO spokesman. However, as Andrzejewski notes, “these reports only have numbers and no recipient information.” What information is available to the interested public is from 2017 and earlier and would not be available if not for the foresight of OpenTheBooks.com — a government watchdog — downloading the documents and reposting them to their website, here...

                        https://www.openthebooks.com/assets/...Equipment1.pdf

The numbers defy conception. 76,000 vehicles, 22,000 of which were Humvees. 160,000 radios. 600,000 weapons — 350,000 rifles numbering among these. While the numbers can be too large to comprehend, what is possible to grasp is the Taliban purportedly flying over Kandahar in an abandoned Blackhawk helicopter.

The costs for just the land vehicles break down as follows, provided by Andrzejewski:

Armored personnel carriers such as the M113A2 cost $170,000 each, and recent purchases of the M577A2 post carrier cost $333,333 each.
Mine resistant vehicles ranges from $412,000 to $767,000. The total cost could range between $382 million to $711 million.
Recovery vehicles such as the ‘truck, wrecker’ cost between for the base model $168,960 and $880,674 for super strength versions.
Medium range tactical vehicles include five-ton cargo and general transport trucks were priced at $67,139. However, the family of MTV heavy vehicles had prices ranging from $235,500 to $724,820 each. Cargo trucks to transport airplanes cost $800,865.
Humvees — ambulance type (range from $37,943 to $142,918 with most at $96,466); cargo type, priced at $104,682. Utility Humvees were typically priced at $91,429. However, the 12,000 lb. troop transport version cost up to $329,000.
Light tactical vehicles: Fast attack combat vehicles ($69,400); and passenger motor vehicles ($65,500). All terrain four-wheel vehicles go up to $42,273 in the military databases.

And on and on it goes for the weapons, aircraft, and sundry other items that make up warfighting logistics in the modern age. But what does it all mean? This is the most difficult to know, as we have records of what we have provided but little knowledge of what still exists in working order. Aircraft and vehicles — such as the Humvee — are maintenance-intensive and of little battlefield value to the Taliban. They’ll quickly find them onerously expensive, as only the finest products of the military-industrial complex can be. Long-term, the value in these vehicles for the Taliban will be chopping them up for parts to sell. The vehicles such as the Black Hawk and Humvees now parading around are doing precisely that, parading for morale effect. Here the Biden administration’s pusillanimity is most evident. They have backed themselves out of Afghanistan in precisely the wrong order, pulling military resources before the contractors and the materiel.

While the Trump administration had its missteps regarding Afghanistan, Biden’s claims that his predecessor forced his hand into this withdrawal approach ring hollow, especially given how he was more than willing to unwind many of his predecessor’s agreements executive orders within days of assuming office. This disastrous extirpation of US influence from Afghanistan rests upon the stooped shoulders of Joe Biden; such is the cost of being the supreme executive. Now the American people must come to grips with a diminished reputation abroad, the reality of many Afghan refugees coming to the United States, whether it be best for the refugees or citizenry — when compared to resettlement in more culturally similar countries, and the deaths of American sons and daughters in a war that ended in abject humiliation.

Reports: Military service dogs left behind in Kabul

Dozens of American military working dogs were left behind in Afghanistan. According to reports on Monday, a non-profit organization said 51 dogs were left at the Kabul airport after the U.S. finished its withdrawal from the region.Former U.S. Navy SEAL and former FBI agent John T. Gilliam said that the order to leave the working dogs behind came directly from the Pentagon. He asked, “who are the contractors and who are the people in the chain of command that did this? How much more does America need to trim this tree?”

Efforts to save the dogs are being made by the group Veteran Sheepdogs of America who called the whole situation a mess. They have raised over $1.5 million so far to secure a flight out for the service members...

Taliban Assumes Control Of Afghanistan With 100,000 US Allies And 200 US Citizens Left Behind

After nearly 20 years the American-led war in Afghanistan is finally over (or is it...). The last US forces left last night, and on Tuesday, Taliban forces took control of the airport in Kabul, while Taliban fighters and supporters across Afghanistan rallied to celebrate the return of Islamic rule.Senior Taliban leaders posed in front of a C-130 transport plane at the Kabul airport, the hub of the chaotic US-led evacuation operation in recent days. Fighters took selfies in the cockpits of Afghan military helicopters, which had been disabled before being abandoned by US troops. The Taliban's top spokesman issued a statement calling for the reconstruction of an Afghanistan now firmly under Taliban rule."We hope that Afghanistan will not be invaded again, that it will be rebuilt, remain independent, and that a holy Islamic system will rule," Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said, as uniformed fighters in modern combat gear knelt on the tarmac and chanted "Allahu akbar".

Speaking to members of the Taliban’s Badri 313 unit, Mujahid continued, via WSJ: "I praise all your sacrifices, congratulate you all on the great victory, and on achieving independence and freedom for Afghanistan." While the Taliban offered amnesty to former government officials and soldiers after taking Kabul and tried to project a more moderate image, they are increasingly returning to their old ways. The Taliban-appointed acting minister of higher education has said women and men could no longer attend the same university lectures, women presenters have been banned from radio and TV in the southern city of Kandahar, and dozens, if not hundreds, of former security officials have been executed. Still, tens of thousands of Afghans who assisted the NATO war effort remain behind in Afghanistan, many still hoping to leave the country before they are imprisoned or executed by the Taliban. Additionally, the US left behind a small contingent of Americans (WSJ says between 100 and 200) and while Secretary of State Antony Blinken pledged to do everything in the US's power to support them, right now, it appears there's little to be done, as all commercial flights have been suspended temporarily.

Turkey has offered to continue to support the airport's operation even as NATO ceases its operations there, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told Bloomberg Television on Tuesday, but the Taliban have yet to approve this, and right now, the airport remains closed. Stoltenberg also told reporters that NATO is working with EU members to stave off a potential refugee crisis, while also working to ensure Afghanistan doesn't become a hotbed for terrorism (here's a rundown of countries willing to take Afghan refugees).

A US-based group advocating for SIVs for qualified Afghans said about 113,000 people left behind by the US and NATO during the withdrawal still want to leave the country. Per Bloomberg, the estimate was produced by the Association of Wartime Allies and based on reports on Afghan employment analyzed by the group and researchers at American University. In terms of diplomacy, the US and other Western nations and India have cut official ties by closing their embassies in Kabul. Pakistan, China, Russia, Iran and NATO member Turkey, however, have left their embassies open. Although they haven't formally recognized the Taliban authorities, they are in regular contact with them. There might be one potential back-channel for the US as rescue operations begin for the Americans still let stranded. The Indian ambassador in Qatar met with the deputy head of the Taliban’s political office on Tuesday to discuss regional security, according to a statement from India’s foreign ministry.

On Tuesday, the Taliban repeated their claim that they want "peace" and a functional diplomatic relationship with the US. Meanwhile, across the country, anti-American celebrations roared as local leaders praised the defeat of the foreign invaders. One senior Taliban leader in Khost praised the suicide bombers whose attacks on the US during the course of the war helped the Taliban secure victory. "We will establish the Islamic system you yearned for," he said, according to a recording of the rally. "Your dreams have been realized. We have achieved the dream for which you had blown up your flesh. We congratulate you in your graves."

The Taliban now control all of Afghanistan’s 34 provinces except for one: Panjshir, a narrow valley north of Kabul where anti-Taliban militias and some remnants of the defeated Afghan army continue to be holed up, hoping to establish a permanent base outside of Taliban control.Though the Taliban and the Panjshiris are negotiating a possible deal, armed skirmishes have continued on the outskirts of the valley.

The question now is how will the Taliban go about running a country of 40MM with few resources at their disposal. Their international reserves have been frozen by the US, and while China and Russia will offer some support, it will be up to the Taliban to make sure sewer systems and electric grids are functioning, as well as the airports. Given the intense international scrutiny, how long might it take for the Taliban to start with the reprisals against any perceived enemies still in the country?

Pictures, Video Show Taliban Flying U.S. Black Hawk Over Kandahar With Body Hanging Below

Since the Biden administration’s slapdash withdrawal from Afghanistan, the Taliban — which had promised to behave themselves — have made use of the $85 billion in U.S. military equipment left behind. Reports from Monday show Taliban forces flying U.S. Black Hawk attack helicopters over Kandahar with “traitors” hanging by the neck beneath the U.S. aircraft. That the Taliban broke their promise of peaceful rule is surprising to no one who has any historical understanding of the tyrannical, terrorist, militantly Islamic group. It was perfectly predictable: The past is the best indicator of the future, and the Taliban have always ruled by terror. The difference this time, though, is that the Taliban have first-world military equipment, courtesy of the Biden administration.

The Taliban are putting that equipment to good (read: bad) use, patrolling Afghanistan and keeping Afghans in check.By using that equipment to terrorize the people of Afghanistan, the Taliban — which were kept at bay for 20 years only by the military might of the United States — are mocking the United States. But pictures and video from Kandahar shared on Twitter Monday show that this is far worse than mockery. The Taliban are using Black Hawk helicopters as platforms for public hangings of “traitors” that assisted the United States over the past 20 years of the Taliban’s exile from power.

This comes the day after Joe Biden was caught looking at his watch during the dignified transfer of the remains of the 13 fallen military members who gave their lives in the wake of the catastrophic withdrawal on August 15.

The public-hanging-by-helicopter is shocking, but not surprising. The Taliban have been nailing “night letters” to the doors of those they accuse of “working with the crusaders” against their particular brand of Islamic rule. The “night letters” order the recipients to attend a Taliban-convened court and face sentence or face the death penalty for the “crime” of assisting the West. But, given the pictures and videos of the Taliban putting a “traitor” on display by flying his dead body hanging under a Black Hawk helicopter, it would be difficult to imagine anything approaching a fair trial that ends in anything less than a death penalty. Again, the past is the best indicator of the future.

The White House has been characteristically silent on this newest development, but should release some type of spin on it in coming days.
